Gauge


18 sts and 24 rows = 4" [10 cm] with larger needle in stocking st.


Instructions


The instructions are written for smaller size. If changes are necessary for larger size the instructions will be written thus ( ). Numbers for each size are shown in the same color throughout the pattern. When only one number is given in black, it applies to both sizes.

Version I
**With set of four smaller double-pointed needles, cast on 84 (96) sts. Divide sts evenly on 3 needles. Join in rnd, placing a marker on first st.
1st rnd: *K2. P2. Rep from * around.
Rep last rnd of (K2. P2) ribbing 5 times more.
Change to larger needles.**

Knit in rnds until work from beg measures 6 (7½)" [15 (19) cm].

***Shape Top: 1st rnd: *K2tog. K10 (12). ssk. Rep from * around. 72 (84) sts.
2nd and alt rnds: Knit.
3rd rnd: *K2tog. K8 (10). ssk. Rep from * around. 60(72) sts.
5th rnd: *K2tog. K6 (8). ssk. Rep from * around. 48 (60) sts.
7th rnd: *K2tog. K4 (6). ssk. Rep from * around. 36 (48) sts.
9th rnd: *K2tog. K2 (4). ssk. Rep from * around. 24 (36) sts.
11th rnd: *K2tog. K0 (2). ssk. Rep from * around. 12 (24) sts.

Man’s size only: 12th rnd: Knit.
13th rnd: *K2tog. ssk. Rep from * around. 12 sts.

Both sizes: Break yarn, leaving a long end. Draw end tightly through rem sts. Fasten securely.***

Optional: Pom-pom: Wind yarn around 4 fingers approx 120 times. Remove from fingers and tie tightly in center. Cut through each side of loops. Trim to a smooth round shape. Sew pom-pom to top of Hat.

Version II
Work from ** to ** as given for Version 1.
Knit in rnds until work from beg measures 7½ (8)" [19 (20.5) cm].
