Crochet-Along Clue 1: Spoilers and Photos

So I have finally taken a picture of my Clue #1 results. I am using the following colors in Bernat Waverly:

Greek Sea (MC)
Incense (Contrast A)
Stone Brown (Contrast B)
Antique (Contrast C)
Aqua Frost (Contrast D)

I love the colors together but am finding the Greek Sea a little too overpowering for me, at least in the ratio of the Clue #1. Based on this clue, I kind of wish I had used Aqua Frost (which is a much lighter shade of Greek Sea) or the Antique as the MC, but that is ok. I am going to roll with it. I think I will like it in the end.

I tried an H hook and an I hook and both came out roughly 4 by 4. I might try with a J hook but I'll likely decide to just go with the H hook and if the blanket turns out a bit smaller, so be it. This is the first pieced together blanket I've ever attempted....
I'm glad no one else's looks like a square either because mine sure doesn't!

I tooo am having trouble with what size hook to use.......My last attempt has been the J, such a big hook, it brought me a little closer to a 4 1/2 inch square but still a little small... Yuks is this just happening to me. Will the rest of the clues work out much to big ??? if I continue with the J ??

I'm using a K and it looks like the perfect size against the template. I did check the size of my template and it is right.

Hmmmm will the k hook not be tooo big for the rest of the clues ???

I ended up going with the J hook and it is closer but still a bit small. I also hope the rest don't work out too big!

When I watched the 'how to' video that Shandeh posted, I realized how very tight I crochet. So I went back to an I hook (H was still too small for me) and relaxed my hands and the yarn. Perfect fit to the template! Yay for relaxing.

Here are my first 3 squares. I was stupid, and only just now compared them with the blocking template, and they're about a cm smaller. Even with a bit of tugging and stretching they don't match. I'm not sure if I should risk running out of yarn and start over with a bigger hook, or just stick with this size and end up with a lapghan instead.

I am using a bigger needle, the yarn calls for an H size but I am using I....I found mine looked better with that one then the size it called for....plus I would prefer something a little bigger than lapghan so it works for me..good luck with your decision.

I need to learn to relax! But with a baby due any day and a 3 and 4 yr old - I'm using crochet to relax however my crochet stitching isn't very relaxed.
