What's happening? Please help :tears: I can't afford to keep 'losing' yarn like this.

You can always re-use the yarn from the squares that are too small.

I get that, but it's not going to be much fun if every clue has to be ripped back.
Are you/Is everyone else managing to use a single hook size?

I'm so sorry you've been disappointed twice in getting your motif the right size. Is the yarn loose enough where it could be blocked to the right size? If not, you'll be happier with it if you use a larger hook. The only other option would be to add an additional row of single or half-double crochet to make the motif larger.

Here's my first completed motif. I'm using Breath of Blue as color A.

I'm sorry. I thought your concern was "losing yarn" that's why I said you could re-use the yarn. I'm not having any size problems thus far using the same hook throughout. A lot of people are having that problem so you're not alone.

I am having so much fun being reunited with my crochet hooks to participate in the CAL. I don't think I have crocheted anything for over a year! My clue 1 squares came out fine but I am also am having problems reaching 11 inches for my #2's. I started out with the H, tried the I and tonight had to go to the store to purchase the J hook and am still not at 11. Wondering if I should go for the K next! The J hook measurement comes to almost 10inches, still not quite enough. I don't know how much looser I can make my stitches!

I ended up doing and extended double crochet for rounds 5-8. It added enough height to my stitches without making my gauge off.

I'm liking this solution to the gauge issue... really did not want to rip out the entire piece and use a different hook and hope it worked out. Would rather rip out only part if needed. Gonna try it when I get home tonight! Thanks!

I hope it works for you.

An extended double crochet is a way to add height to a double crochet. It is taller than a double crochet, but not as tall as a treble crochet. You are basically adding a chain at the bottom of the dc.

This is how you do an extended double crochet (edc)

Yarn over, insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and pull up loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over and draw through 1 loop, (yarn over and draw through 2 loops) 2 times—1 edc completed.

Here is a picture of 4 of my finished blocks. Mine also were about 9.5" when I finished crocheting them but as you can see from the picture, they stretched out easily to the 11" size. As my printer is out of commission right now (blocked by boxes from son's room, he is moving out), I just used my ruler to get the correct measurements.

I'm confused: What is an extended double crochet? I think that this may be useful for me as well.
