Also, you might try to slow down and relax a little. You made that first motif in record time! (Probably from all the excitement.) I know that if I am tense or excited, I will crochet tighter than normal.
I am a really fast crochetter is all. My guage is actually really loose. I just did the gauge test (12dc, 7 rows= 4 inches) and it is perfect! I am really confused! I will take the advice though and try the next hook size up...grumble
