Crochet-Along Clue 5

Hi,
I am new to this forum. This is my first CAL and my first afghan. I have been crocheting for about 8 years. I taught myself from videos on YouTube. Learning to crochet saved my life. I took up crochet when I quit smoking and have not had a cigarette in 8 years. I got a late start on this CAL but have finished clue 1 & 2. I have started on clue 3 and I'm hoping to catch up to everyone by the time we reach clue 6. Reading through all your posts has really help me along the way. I have been able to see problems and solutions before I get to the motifs. Thanks for all your help. And it is nice to be crocheting with all of you.

Welcome! This is my first CAL and afghan as well. I taught myself crochet last year via You Tube. I had been knitting for about 3 years prior to that. I have found the forum to be extremely helpful and motivating.

Are people finding that you all need to use the same size hook as for the other octagons? I found that I've been having to use a larger hook for the octagons vs. the squares...

I think I am a real odd-ball because I have used the H hook for everything so far and they have all turned out to be almost right-on the templates. I really don't hold my yarn--just let it flow through the fingers of my left hand.

I do exactly the same thing. Using H hook for everything, and no troubles.

I've been having luck with H all along as well, though haven't yet tried this one. My clue 4s came out a LITTLE big, but nothing major...and I only had to block out two of Clue 2 to get them to 11". This yarn has so much give, I'm not worried at all. Now, my story may change in another 10 weeks when nothing fits together right!

You sound like me! I never know what to expect in life, so I just roll with the punches.

THIRD TIMES A CHARM!!!!! After doing the clue with an I hook and it being to small I tried with a J hook and it was STILL too small. Finally I went to a K hook and it came out perfectly! No blocking will even be necessary! FINALLY!!!! Hopefully people who haven't started yet will be able to learn from my mistakes!

After futzing (word?) with the first two of this clue using the H hook, I switched to the G hook and the third one came out to 11"! First time I've had to switch hooks since the CAL started...hopefully I will be able to go back my "H" for the 6th clue.

Just want to say that I hope these clues and help stay here for a while. Been absolutely crazy around my house for over five weeks; some sad stuff, bad stuff and wonderful stuff . I just finished clue 1. I hope to do some major catching up in the near future.

Oh, boo-hoo for me I'm away from home on a business trip, didn't bring any MC yarn with me (guessed wrong on which one to put in my suitcase - I thought for sure we would be using B). And now I am left with a loooong flight home tomorrow and itchy fingers with nothing to do. Oh how I am missing my crochet!

Decided to try to follow the chart withough peeking at the pattern while making my second octagon. I must say that, while I still like following the pattern better, I can do the chart thing! It opens up some patterns for me that I could't do before because I had never learned to read a chart. CAL teaches everyone new things!!
