We know a lot of people have finished their motifs, and that's great! Not everybody crochets at the same pace, however, and because this was a CAL geared at everybody from new crocheters to experienced, everybody works at a different pace. We've been mentioning since the beginning that there will be a catch-up week, and we know many members have been depending on using that to complete their motifs. Plus, everybody works differently - some people block as they go, while others wait until the end and have a blocking bonanza.

When planning the CAL we knew it was important to have a rest week so newer crocheters (and those with less time to crochet, or those who simply don't crochet as quickly as others) have a chance to get caught up before the seaming week.

If you're done your motifs, this week take time to block (we promise it's worth it!) and come up with your own ideas for motif arrangements, which you can share on the Blanket Possibilities post. Since a lot of members aren't considering blocking, I thought I'd explain why it's wise to block your motifs. The CAL motifs involve a lot of open, almost lacy, spaces, but they show up best when the fabric has blocked because it allows everything to lay uniformly flat, and many of the stitches to open up to their full potential. Check out the Ravelry discussion on the befores and afters of blocking to see how amazingly blocking can help a project.

I like how this CAL is geared to all crocheters; from 'newbies' to old pros. I figured this would be a catch up week so I didn't try very hard to get last weeks done and blocked.

As for the blocking. I, too, had never bothered blocking anything besides snowflakes. But the difference in blocking THESE motifs is amazing! Like mentioned, it opens up the flowers and stars, etc. Why not try blocking (for those of you that never do). It's a new skill just like the stitch patterns. Plus you may be very pleasantly surprised at the change in the designs.

Thanks again, Bernat, for this great CAL 2012 and the opportunity to hook together :) :bravo:

As for layouts? I'm clueless there. I'll probably not do much of that... especially since everytime I lay out my motifs to take a picture, my daughter's cat thinks they are for him to bat at.

same here, stitchychic. Well, i do block for certain things, like clothes, especially if they're curling, but these I haven't.

anyone ever blocked a large one-piece blanket? I'm going to HAVE to block the orange mandala blanket i'm working on in order to get it to lie properly. but it's big (about 5' diameter), i have to use steam, and I dont' have a non-wooden surface anywhere handy I can do that one...can't use carpeted floors, can't use hardwood floors, can't use wooden kitchen table. suggestions? weather's not nice enough to do it outside on the deck..and that's wood too! when i was a teenager I once put a towel down on my mom's good antique mahogany dining room table and did my ironing on that cuz I was too lazy to get out the ironing board.....boy did i catch hell for THAT, and for good reason. I put a permanent white spot on the table which is still there (it's my table now).

Shandeh posted her star afghan that she blocked after it was finished but I don't remember what thread it was--really unique method of blocking.

I'm pretty sure pinned that to her wall to block it.

Does this mean no more motifs - all that's left is sewing it together?

:geek: You mean you finished every single one AND blocked them????

:knit: My mom is doing both of these blankets. So she has no week off in the knitting one! But, making another out of one color sounds like a great idea! :bravo:

As much as I would have loved to see how we're putting all of these pieces together. I still have to finish 1 1/2 of clue 6, and I have a ton of work to do on my KAL. Maybe this week I can actually earn my first KAL badge... :knit:

I was hoping for a catch up week! I am doing both afghans and I was trying to get caught up on the kal this week. I have all but the last motif to crochet for the CAL and I have only the last 4 blocks of the KAL to finish. Wow! There is still a lot to do for the KAL for me but I know I will get there in the end! I am REALLY looking forward to the CAL layout!! Crochet is my "first love for yarn" but I enjoy knitting as well!

Well I'm caught up on both the CALs Im doing, and I don't block so a bit dissapointed.

But I did start a third CAL to give to my sister for her birthday in July, and I'm up to clue 5 with that one,
so I guess I will catch up with that one!

Only one more motif for Clue 6 to do. Yippee!! Blocking almost finished. Whew! Now I've a got a week to read a new book, A Death at the White Camellia Orphanage by Marly Youmans! (Maybe I can finish the book before next week's clue is posted!)

I just wanted to say thank you Bernat for this Cal. I have learned to read a chart, learned more skills not just the basics and have had a great time seeing everyone's work and reading their stories. Certainly needed this week for some catch up and blocking. I certainly understand the disappointed ones, but all in good time right? Have a great week everyone!!

So Sad

Postby frozenscout » Wed Mar 28, 2012 12:26 pm

Oh sooooo sad! I thought we were going to see how to put them together this week. I made myself finish all the blocks by this morning and couldn't get on til they were done and my bread started! I guess I will just have to work on the knitting blocks(I am SO far behind on that one) and try some layouts for the crochet blocks since they are all done and blocked.
