I don't mind seaming when everything lines up, but several of the motifs have a different number of stitches, and that's what's killing me right now.

No need for the number of stitches to match. Just make sure they line up with the beginning and ends at the same place. I usually lay mine out and stick a little hair clip on the middle and the ends. These little hair clips are inexpensive, and work great for holding seams together while you work.

Quick update.....Mom passed away this morning peacefully and in her sleep. I am 3/4 of the way through seaming the afghan together, will have it done tomorrow and ready for the funeral on Monday. It will be borderless for the funeral but that is fine.

Well I got all of the octagons and squares sewed together, now I just have to sew the long rows together.

I finally finished the afghan as far as sewing it together. I was getting such a backache sitting on the couch sideways to sew the rows together, that my Dad suggested I clean the table off and put the afghan on the table. I tried that and it worked. My bad back is still sore today and may have to put my TENS unit on my back to kill the pain. But I did find relief by moving to the table. I used safety pins to hold the blocks together until I got to them with the sewing needle and yarn. Then I would remove that pin and continue sewing until I got to the next one. It really went quicker having it on the table then on the couch.

I've seamed 3 rows so far and I have to say I don't like mine at all. It isn't the pattern coz I love that, it's my color's. I think I might do this pattern again with other color choices.

I've been thinking that I might make another one in just one color - Birch White.

So sorry to hear your mom passed. You and your family will be in my prayers. What a wonderful idea to use this blanket during her service. Don't focus on the fact that she didn't see it finished, but on the joy you shared in doing this together, then you will see that she shares in all your projects in the future.
