I've been crocheting for almost two years, and trying anything above EASY frightens and frustrates me. I have to SEE things or be right there with someone in order to understand sometimes. I'm going to try this though....I feel the love.

I was a beginning crocheter when the last Bernat CAL took place. I used the CAL as a way to learn how to crochet! I didn't make as many squares as everyone else did, and made a baby blanket, using Bernat Baby Coordinates instead of Softee Chunky. Each new clue was an exciting challenge to me. The instructions were very clear, and the illustrations and charts helped a LOT! Also, there were videos available, to help show how the blanket should be crocheted. I was so pleased with my finished blanket!

This will be my second time. My first was the Saturday morning hoodie. Looking forward to the start.

Hi everyone!

I am SO excited to be a part of the Bernat 2012 Mystery CAL afghan!!

I taught myself to crochet just over a year ago and I can't get enough of it! For Christmas I made (and am STILL making) hats, fingerless gloves, sock monkey hats, amigurumi, scarves, flowers for hair accessories and purses and tiny hand-bags.

I planned on working on an afghan for myself after I finished with all the gifts in January anyhow. (I'm still working on the gifts because i sort of planned poorly with my fibro) So the timing of this is perfect.

Can anyone tell me what other yarn would work well with the Waverly for Bernat? I need this to be for my family room and the primary color is plum. There is no plum in the collection so I'm going to have to go elsewhere. I did look at the other Bernat yarns but the only one that would work is out of stock. I guess I should ask if it's ok to use a different brand on this. If not, I'll have to make this for another room.

I can't wait to get the yarn ordered so I can get everything ready! :hellogoodbye:

Maybe you could make your blanket with all neutral colors? That would make a nice contrast in the room.

The 2010 CAL was my first ever CAL and my first ever Afghan. I loved this so much I made 3 of them as Christmas presents. Some of you might also like to know that I did the joining and edging in 100+F temperatures as it was Summer! The other thing I would like to thank Bernat for was the wonderful comraderie, pattern writing etc that that CAL had. I really don't know if I could have done them without the forums.
On a personal note. I don't know if I actually said it at the time, I was, and still am, partially paralysed from a stroke like condition and was recovering from brain surgery when the CAL started. I didn't know if I was actually going to be able to be able to crochet one afghan let alone three but the CAL gave me purpose every week and something to do and something to look forward too! Thank you Bernat. And I can't wait to do this one..... I just need to decide on colours, so many ideas!

Re: First Timer and amount of yarn question

Postby OhioAunt » Fri Jan 06, 2012 10:55 pm

I'm also a first-timer for this. Experienced crocheter, but I usually do my own thing . . .
and I've already started doing my own thing here! I used the Waverly palette and chose my five colors; but even with the discount, it came out to nearly $60 once shipping was added. So I headed over to Wally World and got similar shades in Lion "Pound of Love" and RH SuperSaver and spent less than $30 for more than the amount of yarn needed. Anybody else on a budget might want to try this! (BTW this is NOT a slam against Bernat; I was looking through Lion's on-line catalog today, and one of their afghan patterns said it would cost $108 for all the yarn needed in the type they recommended! What is the point of doing it yourself if materials cost that much? Unless it's something special like angora.)

I do have a question about the yarn required (though I'm pretty sure I have enough for whatever comes up). In the color tutorial it says for the CAL that you will end up with about 60% of the afghan in main color and Contrast D (30% each), and only 11% each in contrast A, B, and C. Is that right? If so then everybody will probably need 800-1000 yards of Contrast D, not just the 400 yards (2 balls) recommended.

I did participate in the last one and it was a great deal of fun. I really looked forward to the new pattern directions each week. And, I am not a huge fan of joining either...but, it went surprisingly quick and I love it! Good luck to all and have a great time! It is very fun to look through all the uploaded photos at the end and see what colors everyone uses.

Yes, You're right. Something looks wrong to me with that too.

I'm not sure how the percentages were figured. But, if you go by yardage, you should be fine.
