Also, based on what I found, at least on this project, going up one hook size only added 1/2". Since I am more a knitter than crocheter, is this kind of a general rule of thumb? Am going to be busy today! Love the pattern and love doing it, is not boring!

I think the main issue with gauge in this clue is that we are doing such a varied mix of different stitches. The chains need to be very loose, and some people make their chains very tight. If the chains are too tight, the motif will not be allowed to stretch out enough.

Donutte wrote:Am finding I really have a problem and it may be with my hooks. An H hook produced a motif 1" short. An I hook produced one that was 1/2 " short. Thus figured a J would do it.
It turned out that the J hook motif came out the exact size of the H hook motif.
Is it possible that not all crochet hooks are created equal or is it due to whatever I am doing?
Am now going to try a K hook and this time check size after the 3rd round.

The type of hook can really affect how the yarn will work up.
If you knit a swatch with one yarn using a metal hook, then a plastic hook, then a bamboo hook, you will probably see a difference in the gauge. Also, different brands of hooks have a different construction at the tip of the hook, which can also affect gauge.

# of Diferent Blocks

Postby sabrinalee50 » Wed Feb 29, 2012 1:30 am

How many differnt blocks are in the mystery afgan fro crochet? So far we have two, I was wondering how many there are. I know there are 12 weeks of CAL, but I know some of those are devoted to putting the afghan together. Thanks :?:

Have found one hook was smaller looking and felt smaller than another. Did finally get clue 2 motiff in MC to correct size; am now working on other color. Did note when doing first motifs that my yarns have a different feel to them (using Waverly) re thickness. And agree, different stitches can result in having to change hook size. Learning a lot from this CAL!

The blocking template refers to six blocks, is that misleading too...?
