BERNAT HANDICRAFTER COTTON #256 COOL CAPS (TO CROCH

Postby tangled » Wed Jan 18, 2012 5:31 am

Hi, I'm a beginner at crochet (not complete beginner) but this is my first pattern. I studied the abbreviations chart but I'm still stuck and hoping that someone could help me.

I'm doing the adult version of BERNAT HANDICRAFTER COTTON #256 COOL CAPS FOR KIDS (TO CROCHET).
I'm confident that I have up to round 5 completed correctly.

This is the bit that makes no sense to me:

" Last 4 rnds form Stripe Pat.
Keeping cont of Stripe Pat, inc 6 sts on every row, as before to 48 (54-60) sts, then every following alt row to 60 (66-72) sts. Cont in Stripe Pat, work 9 (10-12) rows even."

I'd like to point out that I am doing this hat in 1 colour and omitting reference to colour changing like it says at the bottom of the pattern.

Many thanks in advance for your help.

You will be increasing 6 stitches on each row, until you have 60 stitches.
NEXT, you will be increasing on every OTHER row until you have 72 stitches.

I hope that helps a bit.

I'm stuck again :(

I've Just done up to 72 stitches and then another row of 72.

I'm stuck on this bit:

"Cont in Stripe Pat, work 9 (10-12) rows even."

Are there 4 more rows of 72 including the one I've just done? I can't help thinking that would be far too small. Or does is mean 9 then 10 then 12? surely it would be easier to write a final number of even rows? I'm very confused.

Thanks again for any help.

The numbers in parentheses are the way that the pattern communicates details for different sizes. So, only ONE of those numbers will apply to you, 9 OR 10 OR 12. You mentioned you're doing the adult version, so that's the third number (in this case 12). Any time you see the parentheses, you'll ignore the other numbers and just use the last one.

So, if you increased 6 stitches on each row, until you have 60 stitches.
then you increased on every OTHER row until you have 72 stitches.
The next step is to work 12 more rows without any increases or decreases.

Does that make sense?
