Wanted to make a blanket out of clue 4 popcorn stitch, on a diagonal. Any ideas how many motifs would need?

Guess you would have to decide how big and what shape of a blanket you want to make , then "do the math".
For a square diagonals start at one corner, increase the same amount, I guess here one square, on each side row after row until the length of the blanket edge, (NOT the length of the diagonal, that obviously will not be the blanket edge) is what you want, then you start decreasing. So decide, measure, divide, count, have fun.

Those motifs are only 4.5" each. Depending on the size of your blanket that could mean hundreds of squares and LOTS of joining. It would be beautiful, though. :hellogoodbye:

Do you mean solid colors for each motif, or are you talking about a yarn that has all rainbow colors in it so each motif has several colors? Black always makes colors pop, but if that is not the look you want you could choose a lighter neutral,(I like smoky gray), or a match to one of the colors in the yarn. Have fun choosing! :hellogoodbye:

Solid colors for each motif. I guess joining them with black might make them stand out more!

Go to your yarn store, take some skeins of your colors to a table, lay them next to black skeins and see the contrast. If you find it's too strong, try other joining colors until you find a level of contrast that you are happy with. The picture is from a pattern book, but is the only example I could show on short notice. :hellogoodbye:

Many moons ago...too many to think about...I made an shell stitch afghan. I would do 2 rows of black then a row of Red Heart Verigated. I used blue, purple, green, yellow and pink(these were the old, really bright verigateds). It was outstanding. They colors up against the black just popped out at you.
