Bernat baby yarn - for adult sweater?

Postby txcatgirl » Tue May 08, 2012 11:05 pm

I saw a Bernat Baby yarn in a beautiful, hard-to-find Soft Peach color last week in JoAnn and was wondering if it could be suitable to use in a sweater or top for me. Recommended needle size is 6. Would it look "baby"? Is it too soft to hold a shape in an adult-size garment? I love the color, and it is rare. Any suggestions for a pattern from this site? Thanks!

I love using yarns for all kinds of projects. The Bernat baby yarns are very soft, washable, and durable. Any of them will work well for an adult sweater or top.

Of course, you will want to do a gauge swatch, then run it through the washer and dryer to see how it turns out. This will give you a definite view of the way the yarn will act in a garment. I usually wash all my handknits on the delicate cycle with cold water. Then, I tumble dry them on the gentle setting.

To find a pattern, just compare gauges on the yarn labels.
For example, the new Bernat Giggles yarn has the following information:
Knitting Tension - 24 sts - 18 rows = 4" (10 cm)
Crochet Tension - 14 sts - 13 rows = 4" (10 cm)
Suggested Knitting Needle - 5.00 mm, US - 8
Suggested Crochet Hook - 5.00 mm, US - H/8

To find a comparable regular yarn that will knit or crochet to the same gauge as "Giggles" yarn, just look through the Bernat "Medium" weight yarns. Be sure to look at the yarn information for each yarn, so you can find a good match. Then, you can look through the patterns for the matching yarn.

Good luck!

Thank you for the clear explanation! Much as I dislike swatching, I'd better try it here.
