As a beginning knitter, I wanted to join along in the sock knit a long but opted to do this pattern instead.

For the first time sock knitter, this is a terrific pattern as it uses larger gauge needles and yarn. The pattern has all the challenges, heels, shaping heel, picking up stitches, gusset, decreases, etc. that other sock patterns have.
Interesting to me, the two alternating rows of purl and slip 1 stitch, knit 1 stitch across is called a heel stitch. It is used to makes a firmer fabric and pulls it in, making the heel flap a little narrower.
Instead of three rows of knit for cuff, I did K1bl, purl 1. I am using the magic loop method which I really like, using long circular size 7 needles, and Cotton Ease yarn that is half cotton and acrylic. Working on solid socks, not striped.
