Please help with pattern.

I am somehwat new to crocheting (this is my first piece of clothing project) and am currently working on the Bernat Toddler Hoodie (to crochet) http://www.bernat.com/pattern.php?PID=272 and I am having trouble with the directions for corcheting the hood. It reads:

HOOD: Ch 76 (78-80-82).
Foundation row: (RS). 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook. *Ch 1. Miss next ch. 1 sc in next ch. Rep from * to end of ch. Ch 1. Turn. 75 (77-79-81) sts. Proceed in pat as given for Back for 3 rows.
Next row: (RS). Sc2tog over first 2 sts. Pat to last 2 sts. Sc2tog over last 2 sts. Ch 1. Turn.
Next row: Work even in pat.
Rep last 2 rows to 59 (61-63-65) sts.

Cont even in pat until work from beg measures 6¼ (6¾-7-7¼) ins [16 (17-18-18.5) cm], ending with RS facing and omitting turning ch at end of last row. Does this mean that I continue alternating the decreasing row as listed above, and the regular pattern until it reaches the proper length?

Shape back seam: Next 6 rows: Sl st in each of first 3 sts. Pat to last 3 sts. Turn. Leave rem sts unworked.
23 (25-27-29) sts rem. Fasten off. I did this and the edges on both sides of the hood turned out to look like steps on each row. Not sure what I am doing wrong. I think the edges should be round?

Please help me!! if anyone can include any pictures or diagrams of what the hood should look like, that would be helpful too.

Thanks
Amber

Hi Amber,

I'm no crochet expert, but I do know that "work even" means to continue working without any decreasing or increasing.

Sometimes, the edges will look like steps, and seaming will make it all look right.

I would recommend contacting Bernat Customer Support (inquire@bernat.com). They will give you the best help, because they have access to the pattern designer.

Good luck!
