Substituting different hook sizes?

Postby Leah00 » Tue Nov 27, 2012 3:57 pm

I'm going to try to make the "Baby Coordinates - Lace Border Blanket" for a friend of mine. I've bought the yarn and everything but I've somehow misplaced my G/6 size hook. Could I use an H instead? I know it's usually not a good idea but I was wondering if it would be ok since it's the next size and it's a blanket...
Hooks are super cheap so it's not a big deal. Just one more thing for me to try to remember at the store! :)

Thanks.

I'm sure it will be fine to use a size H hook for your blanket.
Just keep in mind that you might need more yarn for your project, since it was designed with the G hook.

keep in mind too that if you crochet to gauge that your blanket will turn out a big larger than specified. I often find I need to go up a hook size when making baby items, so this would not really be a problem for me!

I've tried working with the Baby Coordinates yarn and a H hook. Since I do crochet to gauge, I found the swatch to be a bit more "airy" than the pattern called for. I would recommend making a swatch before you start the blanket and see how it looks. The other thing I found about this yarn is that it is not always that easy to pull back rows due to its texture. Good luck with your project! Let us know how things work out for you. :hellogoodbye:

Thanks! I'm going to try it.

I've become a pro (not really..haha) at making scarves but this is the first baby blanket. I hope it turns out ok! :)

Just a quick update! I decided to use my F hook instead of the H.

I just finished it! :) It looks pretty. I'm happy with it but every time I finish something it makes me want to try something more complicated. Everything I do looks too plain to me when I'm finished. Oh well, I know my friend will like it.
My four year old son keeps telling me that I need to make him a boy blanket so he can be warm too. :)
