Looking over the hat pattern, I'm confused about the even-number row instructions for the top shaping on the hat. The instructions say to continue even in pattern for the even rows. I'm wondering, though, where the purl rows come in. THe previously defined pattern (rows 1 - 12) showed some of the ODD rows (7, 9, 11) as Purl, and all the even rows knit. But in the top shaping, all the odd rows are knit decrease rows. HELP? Thanks!

Yes it changes. What size are you knitting ? You have to stick to the 12 rows of the pattern keeping the same pattern repeat while you are decreasing. Therefore
some of the even rows now become purl rows.

I'm making the smaller size - 3-6 months. OK - so after the 12 rows of pattern, it says to knit round 1 again once. So that means when i knit row 1 of the top shaping, that is actually row 2 of the pattern? If so, I think I get it now! Thanks.

They have access to the pattern designer.
My personal advice is to just dive in and work on it. Most patterns make more sense when you have the stitches in your hands.
