psychedelic doily!

Postby mittenmaker » Sat Mar 24, 2012 4:03 pm

Beth's gorgeous Claddagh Shawl is a tough act to follow, but I just wanted to share a photo of my latest FO. . .it is a birthday gift to a friend. . .used Handicrafter yarn in (you guessed it) Psychedelic. I love this color. . .makes me think of reggae music. . .I made a handbag (my first) last summer out of this same yarn.

Is that striped or variegated /ombre?
This looks really cool. Do you really need three or more needles to make this design?
What does FO stand for?

It's an ombre color in Bernat Handicrafter.

The design is worked in the round, using double pointed needles. You actually need four needles. The work is held on three needles, and you use another needle to knit across each needle. It's easier than it sounds, because you're only working with two needles at a time, just like normal knitting. The hardest part is the very beginning. After a few rows, it gets much easier.

FO means "finished object"

UFO means "UNfinished object"

WIP means "work in progress"

Thanks karenarp, for checking out my doily washcloth! Glad you liked it. Just as shandeh says, it was worked using 4 dpns. What do you think, shandeh, about using 5 dpns--2 st cast on per needle? Only reason I haven't tried it that way yet, is that I keep track of my work better, knowing that I have less stitches on my 2nd needle. (I'm notorious at losing track of my YOs.)
On my first try making the doily, 7" dpns would not accommodate the large number of sts per needle, as work progressed. It was very difficult for me to try to cram all those stitches on 7' needles--they kept falling off! :ire: So I located 10" dpns on a site called eknittingneedles.com 10" dpns are very hard to find, at least for me--I tried all the big craft stores' and even Mary Maxim websites. . .to no avail. I am happy to report that I had no problem making the project with my 10" dpns. :D
I will share a picture of handbag I used with this fun yarn. I got the pattern for free @ Jo-Ann, at the Handicrafter yarn display.

I usually stick with 4 dpns, and when it gets too large to hold on the dpns, I switch to a 16 in circular needle. No worries about the stitches coming loose then!

This is so pretty. I made a slouchy hat with a similar pattern on the top. Where can I find this pattern? I have a large skein of handcrafter in Christmas colors. Think I will make some for gifts. Again thanks for your inspiration .

Shandeh--Splendid Idea! I never thought about switching to circular! Like switching to DPNs from circular when project gets too small!
