I looked on you tube for videos of magic loop till I understood it. I kept watching the different videos and then I finally got brave and picked up my circulars and tried it. I don't think I could have understood it at all if I had not tried dpn's first and understood how those worked - which before this monster I could not wrap my head around at all. It all looked so confusing and complicated and fiddely. The nice thing about magic loop, you can't twist your stitches! The first row stays put when connecting. I notice most patterns when telling you to separate the stitches onto the different needles always also say - careful not to twist.

You tube has videos for everything! My old computer would not let me use it, I could watch one video then I needed to reboot. So for the longest time I resented you tube. But now with my new better computer (laptop) I can watch you tube all the time so now I get to fully take advantage of all the teaching videos and see different styles done by so many different people.

Wish we had a Joann's up here! Not for their yarn, but the other craft supplies, like fabrics and other things Michael's won't carry.

I totally agree. I love being able to check things on You Tube. If it wasn't for Mikey's video I don't think I would have picked up the stitch for the Mermaid purse so easily and I never would have got those handles down without him. I am also trying to finish up an older project, a baby sweater with a knitted picot edging. I have never done that before but found a video of exactly the edging I will need to do on You Tube. It's a great resource :knit:

Magic loop is awesome for circular knitting, and you only need one long circular.

But, I'm an old-fashioned girl. I love using dpns. :)

Hi karenarp and shandeh! Thanks for info about magic loop--I have not heard of this technique--I had heard of using 2 circulars. . .I didn't know about using only 1 long circ!
I do like the part about not having to worry about twisting stitches. I have a sock book that teaches knitting w/ 2 long circulars. It looks a little odd, but I'm sure it's no different than developing any other new skill! Since I have been taken up with knitting, it has made me less apprehensive of trying new things! :)

I like YouTube for learning too . . . I remember learning how to knit in front and back of stitch from a Sarah White video. Also, it helped me learn cable cast-on. I like videos especially, because I can watch over and over, ad finitum, and not feeling pressured or critiqued! :?

Hi mittenmaker! :hellogoodbye:
I agree about the online videos. That is how I learned to knit!
I sat in front of my computer with a skein of bright red yarn, and some long size 10 needles, and practiced casting on, and the knit stitch OVER and OVER and OVER again while watching the video. I didn't think I would ever get it right. But, it finally clicked one day! :D

I love those AHA moments. . .wish I could get one now. I have a knitting magazine that has instructions for knitting broomstick lace, and I just can't get it thru my noggin, and I've been working at it on and off all day. I have devoted almost an entire day to it, and it just doesn't seem to work out quite right. :( I googled knit broomstick lace, for a video, and to no avail. I am just fixated on learning this, for some strange reason. The illustrations in magazine are good, but the written instructions seem a little vague. :reading: :idonno: :knit: I grasp the concept, but maybe I'm overcomplicating it, or maybe missing something! (I tend to do both.) Oh well, I will figure it out, maybe a nice walk (it's so nice here today) would clear my head. Oh well, if nothing else, it is an exercise in patience. A bonus: I learned about using a Lifeline--that should make life in my knitting world a little more efficient! ;)
Oh and by the way, a shout out to my sweet husband, who bought me the knitting magazine as a surprise "just because" gift! :inlove:

I hope you figure out the broomstick lace!
Try searching videos, leaving out the word "knit". You might find some that way.

Interesting! I wonder if the yardage in Satin was changed at some point, and the patterns don't reflect the change? :hrmm:

I was told by one of the employees at my local Joann's that the Satin yarn was changed. I'm not sure about the size of the ball, but I noticed that the texture has definitely changed. I ran into a similar situation in which I went back to make a pattern in which I had written down the amount of yarn needed, only to find out I was short by one skein for each color.

The balls that I bought recently all had 200 yards, and thats what the website says, however, it also says that the Ombres are only 165 yards. and just for reference, when I bought Satin for the On the Lace Cardigan about a month ago, the pattern called for 5 balls for my size. I used 4 and just a very small amount of the 5th one.
