Designers?

Hi all,

A spin off from another topic....do any of you design your own patterns, then post them? I was just curious on some of the accepted formats, and so on. I've published a few patterns on ravelry, but I've never had them tested ahead of time - I don't know anyone whom I'm comfortable asking to do that, since it's got to take a good bit of time. I worry that I post patterns that will frustrate other crocheters if there are errors or confusing bits. I HATE it when I have a pattern that doesn't work out or is confusing.

Also, have any of you sold patterns? I'm listing all of mine for free so far, although i do have a couple I haven't written out yet that I'm considering making for-sale.

I LOVE writing my own patterns..it's almost more fun that doing the crocheting itself. I designed what I'd call my first original design about 3 years ago, but I've never published that one. Most of the ones I have published are small items - a hat, some scarves, a toy.

That is awesome Jazz!! I designed a crocheted blanket about twenty years ago. It was pastel blues, pinks and yellows, just a simple square I made that starts out dark and gets lighter and is interspersed with whites. It was really pretty and I sent a picture to a magazine contest. I wish I had it now and could post a picture here! But alas, I was young & because it didn't win I decided I didn't like it as much as I thought I did! :idonno:  Eventually I gave it to a thrift store I think. I have also designed pot holders. They don't work because they are only one layer of sc but they are pretty. I made a fillet crochet design with hearts in different shades of green on yellow. I made a few different ones. My favourite was a leaf with embroidery over the top. But I lost that one. I do , however , have one with a heart left  I appreciate you bringing this up because it's made me realize that we can all be creaters and designers and the more we design the better we get!!! On this forum I have heard the words "Bernat design studio" several times, and I imagine a place with lots of yarn in different textures and colours and lots of time to just create whatever I want! It sounds really cool :cooldude: (wouldn't it be fun to design a mystery blanket?) :)

We definitely have yarn EVERYWHERE. It's coming out the wazoo! We need to have a ball in every shade of every yarn available for the designers, as well as plenty of extras for their assignments. We're bursting with yarn, and it's fabulous!

oooo that sounds....orgasmic. LOL. Half my problem when I get an idea is, darnit I don't have the right yarn! I have a design in my head right now that I have to go buy the yarn for, and I want to do it NOW because I think it's one that would sell, and I don't want someone else to beat me to it!

oh I definitely like that! and you should use cotton yarn and make it a dishcloth. Then the fact that it's single-thickness wouldn't be a problem.

here are 3 of my designs - 2 are published on ravelry, but the blanket I've never published, even tho' I do have i written up. I also don't have any really good pictures of it, because I gave it as a gift as soon as I finished it. My brother's mother-in-law (the recipient) has promised me pictures, but so far I haven't gotten them (IN TWO YEARS! LOL)

A question for others who do their own designs - do you write them down as you go? or finish something, the try to reconstruct how you did it? I tend to do the latter, which sometimes drives me INSANE, cuz then I can't remember how I did things! for instance, I created a stocking cap made from (another brand) Curly Q yarn, which made a wonderful, stretchy, comfy hat, and I have several friends asking for it...but then because the yarn is so squishy, I had a devil of a time repeating it!

Jazz hooked, do you use your purse? I have some favourite green shoes that would match that colour perfectly :)
That blanket is unusual! And I think I can say that because I have about a million blanket pattern books lying around here! Keep designing

LOL no i don't use it - I'm not much of a purse person (purse purson?). I carry only very small purses. I made that one for my "inventory" so I can someday start doing craft shows. I had planned to start the end of this month, but I'm just not ready....I have enough inventory for a small showing, I think, but I don't have tables, a sign, business cards, the binder I'd planned with pics of stuff you could order.....so I decided to put it off a bit longer. So that purse sits with about 15 others and a bunch of scarves and hats in a tote in my living room.

I"m trying to use up stash yarn on small projects like purses, hats, scarves, hotpads....things that are cost effective to sell. But i got sidetracked by blankets lately...I have 5 of them in the works right now... the orange spiral one i posted in the CAL board is almost done...but then I need to work on the guitar one I promised for a friend. oy!

the sand n sea blanket...the recipient certainly loves it. I've been asked for the pattern a couple of times, and even mailed to a lady who saw me working on it in a doctor's waiting room. I just wish I had better pictures.

here's a small detail:
