I have knitted most of my life and I hold the yarn in my right hand and loop it over. With crocheting, I have to hold it with my left hand. What is the best way to do that? I can't seem to hold onto it for more than a couple of stitches. And, the tension is all over, too loose, too tight, falling off my fingers. There is probably a simple solution, but it is frustrating.

Good question! I think that you should try different ways of holding the yarn until it feels comfortable for you. The tension will get better when you settle into your favorite one. Just be patient for now, and keep working. Your first project will not be as nice as later projects will be. But, you will learn a LOT in the process. And it is SO EASY to unravel crochet. So, if you don't like it at the end, just unravel it, and make it again.
When I hold my yarn, I weave it through the fingers of my left hand: over the index, under the middle and ring fingers, and over the pinkie. When I was younger, I would wrap the yarn around my pinkie, and bring it over my index finger. But, as I've gotten older, that grip was hurting my hand. So, I had to change to weaving it instead.
Good luck finding your perfect yarn hold!
