Learn to Crochet III - Awareness Cup Cozy

Postby Shandeh » Sat Jun 02, 2012 9:20 pm

Wow! We sure have learned a lot about crochet in a very short time!
For our first project, we made a simple dishcloth, then we made baby booties for our second project.

Now, we are ready to learn another skill - crocheting in the round!

We will be making some quick and fun Cup Cozies, with an applied Awareness Ribbon.

The original pattern has a pink ribbon for Breast Cancer Awareness, but you can choose your favorite cause, and make the ribbon the color you want. Here is the Wikipedia page about Awareness Ribbon Colors: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_awareness_ribbons

If there is no cause you feel passionate about, you can just leave the ribbon off. Your cup cozy will still look and feel wonderful. :)

To make your cup cozy, you will need Bernat Handicrafter Cotton yarn, in three different colors. (Yay! We will learn to change colors!) If you don't apply an awareness ribbon, you will only need two colors. With the yarn you purchase, you will be able to make TWO cup cozies. ;)

You will also need two different crochet hooks. Size J (6 mm) for the cozy, and size H (5 mm) for the ribbon.

:knit: I have used this ribbon pattern for my 17 year old grandson. He gets me to make the ribbon for him and lots of his friends to wear as pins at school for the Breast Cancer Awareness Month. I'll make this Cup Cozy for him. :)

I made my cup cozy today, and really love how it turned out! Will be posting photos very soon.

My ribbon is for Autism Awareness, so I used Bernat Handicrafter in Psychedelic. That color worked well to make a puzzle ribbon. :)

I also made videos of each step in the process. So, I'll be posting them soon as well.

I have to say that I might need some help from some of the more experienced crocheters, myself. My rounds didn't end the way I wanted them to. My joining stitch kept slanting to the right. :(

I might make another one, trying to make it go straight up the side of the cup.

Here's my cup cozy!

Finished Cozy on Cup by Shandeh, on Flickr

I used four different yarns. The three in this photo are what I used for the body of the cozy. I used the "Mod Twists" (on the right) throughout the entire cozy, and switched between "Mod Blue" and "Mod Green" for the stripes.

In this photo, you can see the "Psychedelic" yarn in the center - that's what I used for the Autism Awareness Ribbon.

And in this photo, I've shown the cozy turned inside out, so you can see the section where each round ended. I have a slant to that joining area, and I'm not sure if it should slant like that or not. So, I'm not quite an expert with crochet yet. But, I'm wanting to keep learning!

:knit: I love the colors your used, they came out great. I have been looking for the quick tips and couldn't find them on how to make a better join when changing colors. I'll try to explain how I do it. I Finish with color A with a slip stitch in the 1st single (pull tight). With color B, slip stitch into the 1st single(pull tight) then chain 1 and single in the same.I hope you can understand it. This looks much better than the old way. :bravo:

I think I've been doing it that way. I do the slip stitch thingy and work a single crochet in the same space. So, I guess, I'm okay. :hrmm: I wonder if I'm ending each round too early? Maybe I'm skipping the last stitch?

How-To Videos for Our Project

Postby Shandeh » Fri Jun 22, 2012 6:09 am

YouTube really has been fighting me lately. :(
I tried over and over again to get my videos for this project loaded.
As it turns out, two of my videos became corrupted. :rainy:

But, three of them are fine. So, you can see where I gathered all the materials, then all of a sudden, I'm finished and weaving in the ends!

I'll make those other videos again, using different colors this time. Maybe I will actually learn how to do the color changes better this time. (Maybe it's a blessing that those earlier videos were corrupted.... :? )
