Help for a new member?

Postby Jewel » Thu Jan 19, 2012 10:26 am

Hi everyone, I am new at this, so please have patience. I am a blind person who loves to knit and crochet. I used to do it before I lost my sight, so now I am a little bit more limited on what I can knit and crochet. I am interested in doing the Mystery afghan with the wvaerly wool, but not sure if it would be easier for me to crochet or knit it, or should I try it at all. I would also like to know how many balls of wool I would need and then either crochet or knitting needle size. I am not sure if it was already mentioned or not. I also cannot see the colors that are offered. Can anyone help? thanks I am hoping that I can get a lot of help with some of the knitters or crocheters out there. Jewel

Wow, Jewel, that's fantastic! We would love to do whatever we can to help you with your afghan. The knit afghan would be easier for you to make. How do you read patterns? Does somebody explain them to you, or do you use a screen reader or a brailler? We can adapt the pattern to make sure you understand it completely, just let us know how it would work best for you.

You will need five shades of yarn. I will give you the knit information now, but if you change your mind just let me know and I'll provide you with the crochet information instead. The five shades are called Contrast A, Contrast B, Contrast C, Contrast D, and Contrast E.

You will need 4 balls of Contrast A. It's the highlight shade and possibly one of the most prominent shades in the afghan. It will also be used as the border to frame the afghan.
You will need 3 balls each of Contrasts B, C, D, and 2 balls of Contrast E. They will be mellow blends. They should go well with each other and contrast nicely with Contrast A. The effect of all these shades together is the look of a time-worn quilt.

We have recommended shades in each of the Waverly for Bernat lifestyles, but if you would like some help from the community here I'm sure we can find some shades that match what you would like!
