thigh high stockings

I want to make thigh high stockings for my niece. I hate working in the round with DP needles so I have an idea that I've seen in a cabled cowl that you work in the flat and then as the cables cross over your flat becomes rounded.

My thoughts are I could work from either top or toe with the DP needles in the round until I get a nice base, then switch to flat with a cable seam up the back of the leg. That would get the biggest part of the stocking done without DP needles. A fairly plain stocking with just enough pattern to draw your attention, maybe some tiny cables up the front and the one along the back seam. I found a really cute pattern for a wrist cuff where a leaf patterns sits separately on top of the base cuff, a bit like a flap .. and I'd love to have this at the top of the stockings. I just want to add a YO section for a ribbon to thread through to tie them above her knee.

I've got three different patterns to piece all this together .. the cabled cowl in the flat, the leaf border and a thigh high stocking pattern in a herringbone that I want for basic stitch counts but not for the herringbone pattern.

Has anyone done something like this before? I could use some feedback, ideas, help .. :idonno:

I'll practice a bit on some swatches before starting the actual project and I've found some lovely silk lace weight yarn that would work up beautifully for this. I'm itchy to get started .. never mind the two unfinished projects on the go (a felted handbag and a bolero sweater for me) AND my CAL (which I haven't done this week's clue yet) AND the corset dress my niece wants me to sew for her. Never mind that I'm moving in a month and need to be packing and cleaning
