Shandeh, could I just ask you - what is the purpose of the yarn overs other than to increase? or is that just it?

Thanks

YO (or yfwd) are used to increase a stitch and create a hole. There are many other ways to increase stitches, some will produce no holes.

I love checking out this link to help guide me in a simple and clear manner
http://www.knittinghelp.com/videos/increases
I linked to the increase page, but there are so many different things covered. My favourite thing about that page is they show you both English and Continental styles per technique. I knit Continental, so this is very helpful to me since most knitters on you tube tend to knit English

The centre of this shawl pattern does look nice with those holes running up the back, so I would keep them if I were to make it.

In this pattern, the yarn-overs create increases and a design on the shawl.

Oh wow - just had my 'eureka moment'! I can suddenly see where the knitting is going! I hadn't realised those were holes in the pattern and that when it said working from the neck down it meant centre outwards!

Many thanks for all the help! I will now get on with it and try and post a picture when it's done!
