Does a hat work up with the right side facing out already or do I need to flip it 'inside out' to have the right side on the outside?

I believe I figured it out. Lol The bobbles were going to the inside and outside, so I just poked the bobble through to the outside of hat and crocheted the next stitch a little tighter and behind it to 'hold' it in place.
But I still want to know that when crocheting a hat, any hat, is the outside of the round really the outside? I mean, there is no need to turn it inside out, right?
