Yarn Allergy???

If you feel like talking about something that isn't knit- or crochet-related, feel free to do so here.

that's awful lotacurls. are you allergic to some clothes also? If your hands and fingers are ok, you could try wearing arm warmers or fingerless gloves while you crochet, and a good cream that will soothe and heal (possibly something with zinc?) I haven't heard of that before.

Yarn Allergy???

Postby Lotacurls » Sat Feb 18, 2012 12:48 pm

Well for some reason I'm finding I am allergic to crocheting :hrmm: OK, maybe not crocheting itself but the yarn perhaps? I started working my motifs last night and about half way through I noticed the top of my forearms started to develop red patches. By the time I finished the 10th one I had to stop cause there were raised red welts and starting to become uncomfortable. Upon waking this morning they are still there :helpme: Anyone else have this problem or experience with this? I don't crochet often but jumped back in to do this CAL. This has happened to me before unfortunately :tears: I don't have any know allergies to any fabrics or materials.

I am NOT using Bernat yarn for this project but am using another well known brand that shall remain nameless. But it is 100% acrylic.

Here's what one of my arms looks like this morning. Took with my iphone so not the best quality!

Sounds and looks to me like you might be allergic to the dyes or other chemicals in the yarns, not the yarns thems elves. When I buy new clothes, I have to wash them before wearing because of the chemicals. If I don't, I end up with the same rashes/welts as what was showing in your picture.

I would suggest purchasing some rubber/plastic gloves like the kind for washing dishes, then cut the finger tips off.
Life is an adventure, just waiting to be experienced!

Last night I was thinking I might have to try some gloves...since two of you have suggested it as well I think I need to give it a shot and see what works. It makes since that it would be the dye/chemicals and not necessarily the yarn. I think I will pick up some Benadryl cream today as well. We are having terrible weather today...hopefully I can make it out!!

Hi lotacurls,

So sorry to hear of your reaction to the yarn. Ouch!

Personally, if this happened to me, I'd go to the local Walgreens, Walmart or whatever pharmacy you use and ask them what they'd recommend for the rash. You might want to bring the yarn label with you in case they want the info.

I'd also say hasta la vista baby to the yarn. It's not worth using since you're allergic to it. Maybe you could sell the yarn to someone who isn't allergic to the yarn to recoup some of your loss.

Hugs, Laina :-)

That looks painful! I'm sorry, I have never heard of this, are you also allergic to some fabrics? My suggestion is to wear arm warmers or fingerless gloves when you knit to protect your forearms. Use a soothing cream under (maybe something with zinc), because heaven forbid, you can't just stop the KAL!! :knit:
