Yep! I already sent most of the yarn to her, and kept enough of each color to make one square of each clue. I'm going to send the squares to her, and she can use them, or unravel and make them again. She may decide to re-arrange the colors a bit. She lives in California, and I live in North Carolina, so this is a bi-coastal project!

That is wonderful! :bravo:

Sounds very fun! Is she crocheting one of each and sending to you? Now that would be a real switch! Or I wonder if there are any knitters knitting the afghan for a crocheter and vice versa!

 I should get my mum to paticipate next time around....she crochets and I knit. I could do the knit project for her and ask her to do the crochet for me!

Always more motivated to finish gifts than something for me that can take as long as I want it to.

Well I am starting over again on these blocks. Redid first block because it was to big only to find even with going down a needle size the first half is to big going to 53 but if I take it down a couple rows to fit the first half square than the second half will be too small. The second half following the pattern is just the right size. Am now doing my third attemp on the first half hoping that if I knit the stitches a little tighter it will come out the right size. At this rate there is no way I am going to get all 8 done this week.

karenarp wrote:I am not finished as you can see! But I am having a lot more fun making this square than any of the other ones so far and I wanted to show off how much I finished in just over an hours work. Mind you, that was learning what was wanted of me. I love how we are building on previous skills as we go along, doesn't feel overwhelming this way.
Can you tell how off my lighting is? Same square pictured, just different sides and they look like two different colours!

**Edit**
I replaced my previous photos with my half way progress photos.
Didn't take as long to get that much more done than the first bit, just over another hour. I figure the whole thing will take me about 4-5 hours. And just to be clear, we have to make 8 identical ones eh?

*Edit*
My finished square is more rectangle. My first side is way big compared to my second side. Should I try using smaller needles to do the first half?

My mom is doing the knit along and just said her square came out too big compared to clues 1 and 2. Any solution?

I think I goofed and entered my question in someone else's post. Sorry.
My question is the same as the other knitters: my mom's square is not square and is larger than the previous squares in clues 1 and 2 even though she is using the same size needles. Any solution to this? Like the other knitter asked: smaller needles? Help!! She's 94 and is easily upset by something like this. Thanks.

:hellogoodbye: Hi Roseannie,
I trashed my first block because it was too big. I went down one needle size and knit the stitches tighter on the first section and then without changing needles just knit the second half a little looser and I got gauge. I just wanted to let you know what worked for me. Hang in there!

I just finished my first square for clue 3. I agree with some of the others that working on the bias goes much quicker for me. I guess that is a good thing because I will need to start over. My first square looks like it's frowning at me... the first half is so loose and over-stretched looking. I keep looking at it to see if it will change shape (yeah right) as if it were magic. I am sure if the square could talk it would say "What are you doing to me? Give me a make-over or face lift woman!" haha!

Well, she only knits. No crochet yet. But, I DID give her a set of Clover crochet hooks with lighted tips! I also worked on a crochet project while I was visiting her last year. But, it didn't make her interested in the craft. She has been knitting much longer than I have. In fact, she is the reason I wanted to learn! Back when she was in high school, I used to watch her knit slippers. I wanted to do it so bad, but I didn't have the patience back then to get it right.

Oh, bless her heart! I'm sorry she's having trouble with the size.
It might help if she tries smaller needles for this clue.
