i hated to do it, but i frogged my first attempt because it was a whole inch too big. i'm going to try going down a needle size for the first half and keep my tension a little tighter and see how it goes.

My tip for working on the second half:
the side with the line from the colour change is the side you should be knitting on.
if it has no line then it is the pattern side and decrease side. This has helped me since I keep forgetting to move my marker from the first half.

Hope this helps someone remember their knit row better.

I also went down a needle size for this clue and my second square is much nicer and actually square this time. I did try going back up a needle size but didn't like the looks of it, so on about the third repeat I switched back to the smaller needles, which for me was size 4.mm

I have finished my 2nd square for clue 3 and have the pattern set for me.

I am using a size 6 needle for the first half - stopping at 47 stitches (fits perfectly on the blocking template for half of the square) - switch to the size 7 needle and knit the 2 rows and then do rows 1-6 five times. It measures a perfect 9-1/2x9-1/2 and when you fold it in half, it matches the first half to the second half. YEAH! Now to keep it the same on the rest (6) of the squares.

Going down to size 4.5 and knitting tightly I was able to get the first half to the right size on my third try. When back to size 5 for second half to get it the right size. Just seven more to go.

:hellogoodbye: I have my 2nd square half done for Clue 3 and I love the textural designs the patterns are making! And Shandeh! I can't thank you enough for making the "tinking" video for the K1below, because I had to tink a row and your video made it SO easy!! Whew!! :bravo: :knit:

I thought I was doing so well. Clues 1 and 2 squares turned out great 91/2 using 4.5mm needles.
Clue 3 square came out 10" square...so I will rip it out and use 4mm for this clue. Hope this works.

So happy I read the posts about the first half coming out large...and happy that I rib tightly. I paid special attention to the first half to make sure I was working tightly with the yarn, and did the second half with normal tension. The result - perfect 9.5 inch square! Now let's see if I can be consistent with the other 7 squares!

Happy knitting! :knit:

my gauge and first two sets of squares were spot on with the recommended size 8 needles, but this third clue has been giving me a fit. my first try ended up over an inch too big. going down to a 4.5mm (size 7) and keeping more tension for the first half still resulted in a square half an inch too big.

i'll have to go down to a 4mm and see if that's enough... i don't think i'll frog this second attempt because i'm too frustrated at the moment, but might come back after i've finished all of the squares and re-do it.

Have 3 1/2 squares knitted so do hope that I can manage the 8 in the week.
The pattern looks great and have enjoyed learning new skills.
Have been knitting for over 70 years and still love to learn new things.
