Okay..after an hour I finally hit gague with a I-9 5.50mm. I used some stash yarn the same weight as Beautiful Things. Will try it again when I get my order. I hope I can keep up the gague was harder than I thought. I never used gague in the past. Oh well as hubby says.." as soon as you're done you'll be finished"!

I think it's best to change needle size and just keep knitting how you are comfortable than to try hard to knit tighter or looser.

After agonizing over how to loosen my crochet stitches for days, I finally got it close. Then, I decided to also do the KAL. I was able to create a perfect swatch the first try. I just don't understand how the tension can be so different.

Oh well, at least I feel ready for when the clues start. :idonno:

I FINALLY GOT GAUGE!
Got lucky at a larger Micahels and apparently found the only metal L-hook in existence (it came with plastic P and Q hooks, but I wasn't going to argue)... under $10, and my swatch was perfect on the first try... the 15th can't come soon enough now!

Congratulations on getting gauge!
When the CAL/KAL starts, Bernat will provide printable templates, which will be handy for checking our size as we go along. So, be sure to print those out, and keep them with your project!

My tension between the two crafts is completely different.
I used to be a tight knitter, and have learned to let the yarn flow more. This helps with gauge, and it also keeps my hands from getting tired and sore. I have arthritis, so I must be careful to avoid injury to my hands. Besides, I am a pianist/organist, and need to be able to keep playing!

My crochet used to be tight as well, but now it's leaning on the looser side.

Regardless of the craft, I have to check gauge with every project, because the yarn and needle or hook really make an impact on how my stitching goes.

So, I decided to go ahead and make a gauge swatch. The 4 in. swatch ended up as 23 rows, not 24. That's okay, I was nervous when I started since I was going to check it. So, it's all good and I'm ready to go. :knit:

Knit Gauge

Postby kathleen5 » Tue Jan 31, 2012 1:13 am

I tried the 5 needle and then the 10 needle. I can only get 3 inches. I can reach 4 inches with 18 stitches but I cannot get the rows. What is the highest needle everyone else is using? Oh and I am using Vanna's Choice yarn since Bernat Waverly is nearly non-existant in my town.

I'm using the recommended needles. I was on gauge with the stitches per inch (spi), but short on the number of rows as well. I think that spi is more important than row gauge. I don't know for sure, but I suspect the clues will say "knit until it's 8in from cast on edge" or something like that rather than "knit 28 rows." You just may need some extra yarn to get it to the right length.
