Afghan Shades - Color Selection

Postby Kaleigh » Wed Jan 04, 2012 11:59 am

What shades do you want to use for your mystery afghan? Are they shades you like, or are you matching them to a room in your house?

I'm going to do the KAL, so I chose Porcelain Red, Butter, Cadet, Breath of Blue, and Greek Sea. I recently moved into a new apartment and it isn't very decorated. It doesn't really have a "feel" because most of the furniture was sourced from family members that didn't need it, and the only really dominant color in the living room room is a teal couch. This means I get to start from scratch! :D I chose the shades in the photo because I figured any decorations in the future are likely to feature one of those colors. I especially like the Greek Sea with the Porcelain Red, and the Greek Sea with the Butter!

You can see how your choices look together on . If you need some pointers on how to match shades to your house's decor, check out the !

Kaleigh, I just LOVE that color tutorial! :inlove:

So nice to have advice from a professional with interior design.

I'm not sure which category I fit into, though. I'm torn between "Past Perfect" and "Beautiful Things". :hrmm:

Having problem with color choice

Postby crochetnut » Wed Jan 04, 2012 4:09 pm

My living room is in the following colors: Dark Green, Tan and Burgundy. Not sure what colors to choose for the crochet a long. I'm leaning towards, sundrift for main color, then incense, porcelain red, irish moss and willow for the contrasts. What do you think of my color choices? I really need some input here. I'm never good at picking colors.

I think those colors would make a beautiful afghan and go well with the colors in your living room.

The Birch White shade isn't a 'true' white, and looks good with browns. It's similar to aran and would be good for the dominant color. You can mix and match it using My Palette
Or... you could use a single color for the entire afghan. I know a couple people here in the office are making theirs in a single shade or tonal.

I changed the procelain red to bitter rose. I think the rose will go better with the burgundy. So my final colors are:
Main color: sundrift
contrast a: irish moss
contrast b: bitter rose
contrast c: willow
contrast d: incense

The willow and irish moss are so close together I thought putting the rose in between them would help with the contrast. Hoping that irish moss and willow won't be next to each other in the afghan. If they are there won't be much contrast.

I used the My Palette and chose Irish Moss, Antique, Birch White, Sundrift, and Breath of Blue. I love, love, love them all. :) My predominant color is the Birch White, though. :)

For both the crochet and knit afghans, you should also be fine. In fact, it sounds beautiful!
