Re: How long should the needles be?

I'll probably be using circulars as straights because my straight 5 mm needles are long. Whenever I take then in my bag they either poke holes in the side or point out, ready to stab people on the bus :(

Any length of straight needles you use will work fine! (until the border, of course)

I will probably do the same, Kaleigh. I love using circulars for everything!

Has anyone answered this yet? I couldn't find a response and I am curious as well.

I LOVE all this talk about blocking!!! I love to learn.I have left over gingham material from a dress I just made for my daughter's dance recital. I thought I would never need it but now I may make my own blocking board with it! I have recruited about five people to learn to knit with the bernat knit-a-long and I said I would help them. something I have noticed about beginner knitters and crocheters when they are making squares to join together is that they are sensitive about their imperfections and their tension changes as they learn. Sometimes people I have been teaching give up because all their squares are different. I think blocking may help them feel better about the end product.

Overall, there is no one color that stands out as a main color in the KAL. All the colors work together to create the design. However one of the colors has more quantity, because it will also be used for the border.

circular needles for this blanket

Postby mkc6003 » Sat Jan 21, 2012 9:27 am

I have 24 and 32 lengths - will either of those work for this project?

As long as they are size 8, you are good. I would probably use the 32" since they suggested 29"

Switching gears a bit...is anyone else having trouble getting the correct gauge for the KAL?

I started my swatch with size 7 needles knowing that I usually do have to go down one needle size. That was nowhere near gauge so I used size 6 needles which turned out to be 5 sts/inch. When I went to size 5 needles I did get 4.25 sts/inch but the fabric is very tight and doesn't lay very well. :helpme:

Dear Bernat Lady...will I be in trouble if I go with the 5 sts/inch

My friend, if you are consistent, your blanket will be beautiful. You should use the needles that feel comfortable with the yarn. It sounds like the size 6 needles are the way to go. Your blanket might be a little bigger, but it will still be a good size.

You might want to get an extra skein of yarn, just in case.

Super! I was so worried that I wouldn't be able to participate in the KAL. I am very consistent in my knitting and I did purchase an extra skein of yarn in each color to play it safe anyway. I'm all set then.
Thanks for your very quick reply! Much appreciated!
