Stitching Choices for your Temperature Scarf

During our current KAL/CAL, you'll be working on a scarf a little bit every day for the whole year. At the end, look back and see how the weather has changed!

 Wow, that will certainly make a nice texture for your scarf!

I am using plain old garter stitch for my scarf, because the Denimstyle yarn I've chosen will not show stitch designs very clearly. Plus, I'm kinda lazy. :D

Hi Jessi. I love your weather stitch ideas! I have a small suggestion for fog - how about using the ribbed there (instead of for sleet) seeing as we drive thru fog in 'come and go' patches? Then for sleet use a diagonal slip stich (is that possible in two rows)? Also, - and I hope I'm not overstepping here - how about seed stitch for hail or snow? I envy you tho, I still can't decide what slip stitch(es) to do for my project. Looking forward to seeing posts of your scarf.

Whoo hoo, I think it's finally coming together. Got the yarn decided (thanks Shandeh), and after trying out patterns and stitch ideas for the last few hours, I've finally settled on an allover stitch choice - the diagonal slip stitch. It's an 8 row repeat, which would fit a 32-day month, so there will be either 1 or 2 rows of white/black to separate months.

I'm excited about using this stitch because my scarf (or a wide wrap, we'll see how it turns out) will be knit end to end (cast on 500 stitches?) not side to side - which means the stripes are vertical when hanging like a scarf but the diagonal stitch will pull the color stripe sideways. I'm hoping it's an interesting outcome.

I was thinking of using a different stitch for different types of weather, so I'll be cataloging more than just the temperature. But I'm having a hard time deciding which stitches to use, since they need to be expressed in only two rows. Here's what I have so far:
clear/sun – stockinette
fog - ?
rain- simple slip stitch
wind - garter
cloudy – reverse stockinette
overcast – moss
snow – double ribbed
sleet - ribbed
hail – double moss
hurricane/tornado/etc. - broken double rib

Just Jessie - I love this!! I was thinking of doing beading, but also considering this as well.....hhhhmmmm...decisions decisions!

I just stumbled on the CAL today.....so Ive got some catching up to do with how Im going to do this. I immediately thought of matching the weather colour with a different stitch....Kind of what Jessi is doing but not quite. Excited to get my thoughts in order to get this going! Im not going to do the current year tho...taking a year to do this will drive me nuts! LOL

Not sure I could stay motivated for a year either......I know, it's only a couple of rows each day.....but that's the problem. I would put it off until "tomorrow," then suddenly realize that I'm a month behind! :o By that time, I wouldn't want to spend the time to catch up on all those rows, changing color every couple of rows.....so I'm afraid this project isn't going to work for me! Our temps here fluctuate about 20-25 degrees between high and low each day. Our low this morning was 38, and the projected high will be 63. Over the next few days the low temps vary between 35-55 and the highs run between 50-76 degrees! It would be pretty colorful, I'll have to admit!

As soon as my yarn is in I am going to start my scarf. I will only knit 2 rows per day of the color and I plan on knitting in a K1, P1 rib. I want something mindless that I can do in a few minutes after I get the kids to bed.

My plan is to make a long cowl that I can loop around a couple of times. I love the look of stranded colorwork, so I'm going to make it in corrugated ribbing! The knit stitches (and the border) will be white, and the purl stitches will be the daily temperature.

I'll probably make it four inches tall, which means each row actually needs to be eight inches. I'll be breaking out my double-pointed needles for this project!

You inspired me to try linen stitch too! I've never seen it before. Here's mine so far. :)

I have decided on the single basket weave. I cast on 26 stitches. The pattern has a repeat of 6 rows, so I am keeping a notebook with a page per month, then per day is the date, avg temp, color yarn, and what to knit for that day. I am new at this so I really struggle with knowing where I am in my pattern. I got a good tip from Vickie Howell, I think, when doing the wrist warmer KAL, to place a post it note under the row you are doing. Hopefully I will get better and won't have to keep on writing down my instructions for each day, but for now I think I really need to to keep me in line.
