Postby Shandeh » Mon Jan 09, 2012 2:10 am

Have you tried using Bernat's 100% Wool "Felting" yarn?

What kinds of felted projects have you made with this yarn?

Have you made any UN-felted projects with the "Felting" yarn?

I'm not a felter, but I really wanted to use the Felting yarn. So, I made a thick, warm sweater for charity! The sweater was donated to one of the coldest, poorest spots in the world. They don't have electricity, so there is no danger of the sweater shrinking.

I just love how the sweater turned out. It was the Men's Small size sweater called "Weekend Raglan" in the "9 Family Designs" pattern book. http://www.bernat.com/patternbook.php?PBS=542012

I tried it on myself, and it fit well.

Chenille yarn

Postby Shelbersjean » Tue Jan 17, 2012 10:37 pm

I have some Bernat chenille yarn, which is very soft and impossible to use! When I knit with it, it quickly turns into a huge, tight snarl. I checked with the Bernat help, but all I got was a suggestion that I untwist the ball or the project as I knit, which would mean untwisting every 2 or 3 stitches! Obvioisly, this is not a workable fix. Does anyone have any other suggestions? If not, I have some yarn to unload.

Chenille yarn can often be tricky to work with.

When I knit with it, I usually untwist the skein with every row, as I am turning to start the next row.

Chenille requires a bit of patience, but the results are worth it!

Yarn substitution: Bernat Velour

Postby CindyLuWho » Mon Jan 23, 2012 9:56 pm

Hi everyone!

I've checked the Bernat site, and I see what they recommend... but I'm not sure.

I have a pattern from 1979 that calls for Bernat Velour (discontinued). The website says it came in 50 gram balls and takes a 10 crochet hook. Do I need to find a yarn that matches yardage with weight? Hook size? The yarns that they recommend don't seem to me to be as heavy as the velour appears in the pictures. Has any one successfully substituted for this yarn?

Any recommendations?

If it matters, the pattern is for a sweater and the pattern book is called "Fashion Gems spotlighting Bernat Velour".

I would appreciate any help! I'm getting desperate!

Moral of this story: do not fall in love with a sweater pattern at a garage sale...

When you're matching yarns, the first things to look for are the weight (as in - #4 worsted, #5 bulky, etc.) and gauge.

Since Bernat Veluour can still be found on our site as a discontinued yarn, you can see some substitutes you can use. Whatever you substitute it with, make sure to check your gauge with the new yarn until you get it right! You should be checking the new yarn against the gauge of the pattern, not the gauge on the yarn label. We've got a gauge tutorial to help you with that :)

Do I buy an equivalent in ounces? yards? For instance, if I get Bernat Softee Chunky, it is in 100 gr balls. Bernat Velour was 50 gr balls. Do I buy half as many as the pattern calls for?
