Knit and Purling

Postby Ladywire » Thu Jan 05, 2012 12:17 am

hi there
I am working on a small project that has a mixture of knit and purl stitches in a pattern form. On one row, it calls for to knit a certain number of stitches, I get that. on the return row, the wrong side row, it calls to knit so many, then purl so many, and then return to knit. I can do that. However, the original knit stitches from the previous row are now too tight and slightly twisted to knit. If I take the stitch from the back side of the stitch, is that considered a purl stitch, or is it a backwards knit stitch.

The stitch is now at an angle, the front of the stitch is farther to the left than the back of the stitch, I have to really pull my right needle over to grab that side of the knit stitch. Anyone understanding me? I certainly hope so. Can you help me out? It is not looking like the pattern.

I might have to take a picture of it and post it.

thanks in advance.

Basic Knit and Purl stitches should both be worked with the front part of the stitch.

A picture might help, so we can all see what you are dealing with.

Pardon the quality of this awful video. I made it a long time ago, with a really cheap digital camera, and I was watching the Appendices from the Lord of the Rings DVD while I recorded.

This shows me knitting and purling, while working on a blanket.
Hang in there....it takes me a while to get the needles and yarn arranged just right.

yes purl stitches should be worked from the front. I made a sweater many many years ago that had the stitch I think you are making. It was a purl from the back and it did look "twisty" . I guess the best suggestion is to try knitting very loosely so that you find it easier to insert the needle down into the front.
