I would recommend following the advice of Zoe Nemetz (Home Product Designer at Waverly), as discussed on Bernat's Color Tutorial.

These are the general “feels” of each shade.

Crochet Afghan
Main Color (MC) 55008 Birch White – Background color
Contrast A (55200 Aqua Frost – Main color story. A, B, and C should work well together.
Contrast B (55630 Butter) – See A.
Contrast C (55010 Colonial Beige) – See A.
Contrast D (55290 Turtle Green) – Accent shade. Should contrast A/B/C and not be too close in value and shade to them.

Knit Afghan
Contrast A (55500 Porcelain Red) – Highlight shade. It is possibly one of the most prominent shades in the afghan, and will also be used as the border to frame the afghan.
Contrast B (55425 Bitter Rose) – B, C, D, and E are intended to be “mellow blends.” They should go well with each other and contrast nicely with A. The effect of all these shades together is the look of a time-worn quilt.
Contrast C (55615 Sundrift) – See B.
Contrast D (55460 Pink Suede) – See B.
Contrast E (55250 Irish Moss) – See B.

Yarn Arrived!!

Postby crochetqueen » Tue Feb 07, 2012 12:35 am

So my yarn arrived today and I must say I am so very excited for the colors I chose! I went with White for the background color, and then Blue Gown, Irish Moss and Bitter Rose for the MC. I am kind of nervous that I chose the Stone Brown for the accent color though. I just read that darker colors for this project sometimes loose the stitches...meaning you can't see the pattern. It isn't a super dark brown so I am hoping for the best, typically the accent color is used for the boarder, so I am hoping that is the case here too. I am so super excited for this project! I have never kept a project for myself in the 9 years that I have been crochetting, and I am 17 weeks pregnant with my first baby and have decided that I will keep this blanket for him/her. The most exciting part is that we will find our what we are having the day the project starts! This is going to be SOOOOOO FUN!!!! :cloud9:

Congratulations! It is so exciting to think that while you are growing a baby, you will be growing an afghan too. Keep us updated on both.

It's February 11th, and I'm still waiting for 2 of my colors!! Ahhhhh!!!! I ordered those 2 colors two weeks ago from Joann's because when I was there, they had the other colors I wanted. So...I'm going to call them tomorrow to see if it's in yet! :idonno: Hoping for the best! The colors I already have are (main color) Beautiful Blue, Sundrift, and Greek Sea. The 2 I'm waiting on are Incense and Fresh Flower. I've never done a KAL or talked on a forum before so I'm very excited!! Only 4 more days!! Woohoo!!

Which shades (A, B, etc.) are you waiting for, and which blanket are you making? With any luck you may not need them for the first week! But I understand wanting everything together in one place!

I'm going to be doing the KAL. I haven't decided which colors will be A, B, etc. Since I haven't gotten 2 of my colors yet, I was thinking of waiting to see the first clue before deciding which colors to put together for it. Is it ok to do it that way? Or should I decide ahead of time? I called Joann's yesterday and my yarn wasn't in yet, but they said their truck comes on Monday (today), so hopefully my yarn will be on it!! :D I'm a pretty fast knitter, so if it doesn't come today I'm not too worried about getting behind. I'm sure I'll be able to catch up whenever I get it. But I'm SO excited  about this mystery KAL that I'm wanting to start right when we get the first clue!!!!! SO....maybe I'll just have to use the 3 colors I have now if my yarn doesn't come in on today's truck! :idonno: Thanks so much for your help! I appreciate having you on these forums to help us out!! :notworthy:
