Reading Books

Postby Shandeh » Sat Jan 21, 2012 10:10 pm

I love to read..... :reading:

I've been hooked on Agatha Christie lately. She wrote so many books, so I'll be busy with her for a while. I've read the Bible twice, and I've read lots of Jules Verne, Michael Crichton, JRR Tolkien, and CS Lewis. And I liked reading the "Cat Who" books by Lillian Jackson Braun, as well as the "Crewel World" needlework mystery series by Monica Ferris.

A friend of mine has recently gotten me started on a gaslight mystery series, but I can't remember the name of the author for that one. I already read all the Harry Potter books - only really enjoyed the first three...the rest just got too evil for my taste. I have several Phyllis Whitney books in my collection, and I need to get to work on them. I also have all of the Anne of Green Gables series.

I sometimes download free Google books, but have only read portions of them. I guess I just like having a book to hold in my hands.

Any other avid readers in our group? What do you enjoy reading?

I love reading too - mostly on public transportation or before bed.

Among the things I've enjoyed recently:

-I just finished the 5-book Song of Ice and Fire series by George R.R. Martin. I can't wait for the next Game of Thrones TV show installation! It starts in April

-I've been reading lots of Sci-Fi and Fantasy. I just started the Asimov Foundation series, and am several books into Ender's Game and Dune.

-I read most of the Sherlock Holmes mysteries in the last year or so. I'm finally getting sick of turn-of-the-century mysteries, but it took me a while. Has anyone seen the BBC show? It's very well done.

-I'd also recommend the Hunger Games trilogy. I like it when young adult fiction is good enough to be accessible to adults.

-Right now I'm reading some P.G. Wodehouse short stories, but I'm not really reading anything seriously.

Any recommendations?

Jeeves & Wooster, a billion times over. And then some more times. If you don't start, I'm not talking to you anymore. THAT'S HOW MUCH YOU SHOULD READ THEM.

(but seriously, they're loads of fun)

A few weeks ago I also finished the A Song of Ice and Fire series - our poor boss has had to hear us talk about it since June. I've had commitment issues since then. I started Deep Secret by Diana Wynne Jones, which I've read countless times, but it didn't grab me. So I tried Children of Dune! Nah. I was getting into Red Dragon, but then I had to return it to the library and there's a number of holds on it.

Now I'm on Shōgun by James Clavell. My boyfriend suggested it, and I'm feeling good because I had a lot of Japanese history courses in university (okay, Japanese religion, but just try and separate the two!) and really enjoyed them. Plus a lot of the characters are based on figures I had learned about, so if I can feel like I'm using my degree for something, I'm all for it!

Aaand finally I'm a little way into Arcadian Adventures with the Idle Rich by Stephen Leacock, which I got from my grandfather. I'm loving it so far! Leacock reads like a Canadian P. G. Wodehouse, and I love me some Wodehouse ;)

I have very eclectic taste in reading materials. As long as it is well written, I don't care who the intended audience is. I recently found "The Highly Effective Detective" series. Quite humorous. I love Harry Potter, and I am working my way through for about the tenth time. I also love the Stephanie Plum and can hardly wait for the movie to come out on the 29th. Currently, I am reding a golden oldie from my childhood, "The Secret Garden". It is such a feel good read and makes me long for spring.

Thanks to my local library, I have weathered a bit of financial rough spot with plenty to read. Not just paper books, but they have a growing selection of e-books. I really love reading electronically.

Jen, I read the Asimov Foundation series - good sci fi and fantasy read. Did you ever read "Contact" by Carl Sagan? It is MUCH better than the movie. Along the sci fi fantasy vein, did you read "The Last Unicorn"? It was kinda cool.

Lucky Rainbow, I am gonna look for that "Effective Detective" series. Sounds fun!

I LOVE to read. Since I retired I've joined 3 book clubs. Mysteries and sci-fi are my favorite to read but I've recently been getting out of my comfort zone and reading other types. Just finished The Women in Black. It's coming out in movie in a few days and wanted to read the book first before I saw the movie. The book is not very long, has little diagolue but some suspense. Also recently read The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series. So enjoyed them all. Saw the movie which followed the book pretty much. Read all the Harry Potter books. In fact the grandkids and I went to the last 3 opening nights of the movies. Recently also read Water for Elephants. It was good but for some reason felt like I had read it before. Haven't seen the movie may do that soon. Always looking for new authors to read. Got 2 series to find from this blog. Happy reading.....

I'm alternating between George R.R. Martin series and Terry Goodkind series. I also plan to reread The Clan of the Cave Bear series by Jean Auel which I read in the 80' when they first came out. I always kept the books because I was waiting for the final chapter. Did not think it would take 40 some odd years. Just think, she started research in 1972, so that's 39 years of Ayla & friends.

I read the Sword of Truth books when I was younger, but I was so young that I don't think I really understood what was going on. I've been thinking about starting over (mostly because I remember Zedd was awesome) - would you recommend it?

I love to read, but not any particular genre. I've read a lot of Robin Cook, i liked the "Cat who" series as well, love a good trashy romance (preferably historical fiction) for a fast summer read, and love to read history as well. I love Stephen Ambrose, and am currently reading about the Balkan War and siege of Sarajevo in the mid 1990's. I've read Harry Potter and the Hunger Games - a friend told me about the first book of a new trilogy called Divergent. I don't recall the author, but it is young adult as well.

Unfortunately, the only thing I'm reading now are textbooks.
