Bernat Pipsqueak Yarn

Postby cinnabunny » Thu Jan 19, 2012 1:17 pm

Last time I went shopping at my local Joanns I picked up 250g/300yds of the Pipsqueak yarn in Dreamy Green, I love this color! So why isn't it online? I usually shop online to buy my supplies since I don't have a car but everywhere I look online places only sell white, pink, lt. blue, and some multicolor yarns and in a smaller amount, I think it's 120 yds. But I also remember seeing yellow, lavender, and blue while I was at the store. I really like this yarn and I just wish you would offer it in all the colors in your online store!

Does anyone know where I can get these other colors online or what they're called? Also are there even more colors I don't even know about? I'm looking for pretty pastels, so a nice orange sherbet color,or hot pink would be nice. It doesn't have to be pipsqueak yarn it just has to be a bulky yarn that doesn't really look like regular yarn and you can't see the holes. I'm making hats from this that are made to look like stuffed animals and I love how this yarn does not show crochet stitches at all! it just looks like a fluffy piece of fabric.

Any shades not available on our online shop have been discontinued :( Your best bet for finding them is probably online, through eBay auctions or Ravelry destashing!

How do you crochet with Pipsqueak Yarn?

Postby DebQuilt » Mon Feb 06, 2012 10:27 pm

I know how to crochet, but I'm having problems with the Pipsqueak yarn? I've tried the I (i) hook and the K hook and I can't see my stitches, so I don't know where I'm putting the hook in for the next row. I love the feel and look of the yarn, but I can't figure out how to use this yarn. I'm not good a knotting, but I tried a little of that and it wasn't any better. My daughter has one of the round "hat" knitting things and I may have to use that. I don't' see any thing at the website talking about how to crochet with this yarn, except the instructions for a pattern.

Pipsqueak is a fuzzy yarn, which makes it difficult to see the stitches sometimes. It helps if you work very loosely with fuzzy yarns, just to make it easier. Keep trying, and focus on the "feel" of the fabric, instead of the look. I can sometimes feel where my hook should go, and then it gets easier as I continue working with it.

Good luck!

Hello! I just finished making a blanket with the Pipsqueak yarn and although it was awkward at first it turned out to work really well. My advice would be to feel for the stitches. Because the yarn has that main thread in the middle and the fuzzy stuff coming out of it, I would feel for the threads and find that "V" on the top of the stitch so I knew where to insert the hook. Does that make sense? I hope it helps!

I have used a sort of similar yarn from a different (B-)brand. Using another 'normal' yarn with it didnt help, just like using a big hook. I just used dc's and tc's, no sc's. That way you can crochet in the space between 2 stitches and feel the space between 2 with your fingers. The first row is hard, but you can practice it by using a 'normal' yarn for the first 3 rows and than the 4th with this yarn.

Aww I feared as much! well I just went to my local Joanns Fabrics and found two skeins in silly sea, so lucky me I guess! I really liked dreamy green, I can't find that color in other kinds of yarn so I really wish that wasn't discontinued. I didn't even think to look to ravelry for yarn, I'll try that thanks.

Sometimes, Googling the name and color you are looking for will find somewhere to purchase discontinued yarns.

With great difficulty! :scared:

I bought some Pipsqueak a few months ago to make baby hats, and I thought I was going to tear my hair out in frustration (or as my 3 y.o. niece would say, "frushiation"). I ended up using a pattern that, as hanneke pointed out, had me crochet into spaces instead of stitches. Way easier to deal with!
