How do you store WIPs?

Postby Kaleigh » Wed Feb 01, 2012 11:38 am

The title says it all - how do you store your works in progress?

I usually put mine in a ziploc bag to keep it together and clean, but yesterday I started a Bernat Alpaca hat on the bus and didn't have one available. The project is now flailing around in my bag.

At home I have a small basket to keep my yarn from rolling away (it's actually to hold sourdough bread... shhh) and a larger basket that I keep the pattern/notions/etc. in.

I have VERY many WIPs, and I think I have just as many storage options! Ha!

If it's a big project that uses lots of yarn, I will store it in a big tote or a large basket. It's easy to grab and take with me to another room, or to visit a friend.

Smaller projects, go in small tote bags.

If I lose interest in a project, I put it in a ziplock bag, with the pattern (marked to show what part I just finished). That way, when I want to work on it again, I'll have everything together, so I can get right back to work on it.

I am easily tempted to start new projects, and am not afraid to frog old projects that no longer interest me.

I like the ziplock bag idea, I have never used ziplocks. I think it's a great idea and I'll try it out for the CAL.

I make a copy of my pattern and store it in the ziploc bag with my CAL's. I then put my bags in a tote like you use at the grocery stores. For my afghan's I use the larger totes I picked up for $1 at Marshalls/ Home Goods/ Christmas Tree Store/ etc. That way when I'm going from one place to another everything is together. I found by making a copy of my pattern and keeping it with my project is great especially if I end up putting the project in the unfinished pile. More than once, I've come across an unfinished project and not remembered where the pattern went for with it.

Like everyone else I have totes and bags and various ways to store 1/2 finished projects. What I'd like to know is, "What does everyone do with the needles?" Crochet is easy to pull the hook and keep using it on another project. Needles are another matter. I hate putting a project on stitch holders and over time I've ended up with 5 or 6 pairs of the same size of every needle just so I can start new projects.

Any better ideas out there?

I have TONS of knitting needles, in every size.
Some are metal, some are plastic, some are wooden.

I have two sets of Denise interchangeables, and a set of Boye interchangeables as well.

And I have a good set of crochet hooks too. An ergonomic set, with different size hooks that twist into place. A full set of the Crochet Lite hooks with lighted hooks. Another full set of Clover hooks with big handles. And various other metal hooks I've collected over the years. I even have some vintage bone hooks.

I guess I just always go overboard with my crafting tools.

I haven't even begun to tell you about my crewel embroidery stuff, or my regular embroidery stuff, or my cross-stitch stuff, or needlepoint, or sewing.......well, you get the idea.

Maybe when I retire, I'll open up "Shandeh's Discount Crafting Supplies", and sell off my collection.

I have the same problem and a friend and I have agreed to *Will* each other all our craft supplies when we die. Neither of us is sure whether this is a wonderful gift or a curse,

I use a tool box to store my knitting needles and supplies. I find it works really well. The needles go on the bottom of the box and on top there is a tray that you can remove, it has long and short sections to keep everything seperate (but together). Try it, you might like it. :hellogoodbye:
