raised horizontal row?

I hope what I am about to write makes sense.

I know how to make a raised vertical "row" in a knit project, using the *slip one stitch to cable needle and hold in back, knit two and then purl the one in the back* ... but does anyone know how to make a raised horizontal row?

I have a sample square that's working where I *make one stitch on every stitch on the row*, then I slip every second stitch until there's a "bump" across the row and then I knit two together to finish the "bump". If anyone has a better way I'd love to hear it.

I want that raised line but horizontally around a bag or hat.

When I want the raised horizontal line I make one stitch on every stitch around the hat or bag, then I k1 sl1 around for several rows, then I k2tog and end up with that horizontal "bump". I'm just not sure it's the most accurate or effective way of achieving this since I had no instructions and just came up with it in my head by looking at a picture.

For the horizontal line you might try knitting 2 rows in reverse stockinette (reverse knit and purl rows). The second pic looks felted. I am not sure how this would work when felting.

The second photo you posted makes me think they added a cord on the wrong side of the fabric, and seamed it in with a sewing machine.

I don't *think* they would do that just because it would be so labour intensive.

This picture is of a little bag I made with no pattern. I made the horizontal row using the k1sl1 stitch I described above.

Again, because it's a pattern out of my head I'm just not sure if it's the most efficient method of achieving this so I was wondering if anyone else knew of a better way.

I guess I'll just have to break down and buy the pattern so I can see how they're doing it. I'll laugh if I spend the money and they're doing it exactly the same way I am.

The only other thing I can think of is a purse I knitted once with a stocking stitch, and then I picked up and added stitches randomly so that there were raised ridges in a swirly pattern.

Here it is, I picked up stitches and knitted them to look like flowers.
