Thanks for the Quick reply! BTW, this is working up nicely. It helps to visualize that we are beginning from the corner of a square, working our way up through an inverted pyramid as an upside down triangle, changing colours at the widest diagonal of the square, then decreasing towards the tip of a right side up triangle of colour. Heavens, geometry class was ages ago and I Forget the exact terminology...

I like to think of it as "make it bigger, add a shade, make it smaller!" But then again, I enjoy the simple things in life...

So far, this is fun! I've never knit on the bias (diagonal) before. I'm glad you corrected the number of repeated increase rows. :bravo:

Hi
You are casting on the first row, but you are only casting on 1 stitch, which might seem odd, but is easy to do. Begin as you normally begin to knit. After the 1st stitch, which is just the starting loop that you normally make, turn your knitting and start the 2nd row, which is to knit, purl and knit all in that one beginning stitch without taking that beginning stitch off the left hand needle until you have done the k p k. Now you will have 3 stitches on the needle, and you will turn your knitting again to start row 4, and I think it will start to look more like regular knitting.
Once you get it, you will see that it is very easy, just sort of awkward at first

Hopefully these are just spacers among more interesting squares. They are also good to get beginners going

Thanks to everyone for the help! I googled "how to knit purl and knit 1 stitch" and found a youtube video that showed it perfectly. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pP_UHylNAMQ

This got me started ---- YEAH!

I just finished my first square with the original instructions. Oops! It came out to be about 5.5" square. It came out very square though, which is maybe a first for me. I think I messed up the k p k in the first stitch though, but since it was the first row, it doesn't really show.
