Your afghan will not work correctly without the color changes.
The color changes make it STUNNING!

Don't be afraid to do the colorwork. Bernat has provided a video, to show how to do it!

I'm curious as to how/where you recommend we place our markers so we remember which stitches need to be increased.

It's best to follow the pattern. The afghan is square motifs, so the design is largely made up by where the colors change. Don't worry, it's not as difficult as it may seem :)

At the end of the last row of the first color, cut the tail off around 12". Then just start knitting with the next shade, but make sure that also has a long tail for seaming later on. There's a video linked in the first post on this thread to give you a hand.

Anywhere on the right side. I just tied my scrap yarn to a visible stitch in the middle of a row. The scrap was Butter and I was knitting with Porcelain Red, so when I was on a side where I saw the Butter scrap hanging down I knew I could increase.

I use a locking stitch marker, and place it on the side where my decreases or increases take place.
You could also use a safety pin, or a piece of contrasting yarn tied on that side.

(removed photo, because this is not the spoiler thread.) ;)

Before you make your final decision, take a look at my CORRECTED quote from Zoe Nemetz. I listed the Crochet Along advice in my earlier post.

Zoe Nemetz, Waverly Fabrics interior designer, recommends this blend for the colors.

Knit Afghan
Contrast A – Highlight shade. It is possibly one of the most prominent shades in the afghan, and will also be used as the border to frame the afghan.
Contrast B – B, C, D, and E are intended to be “mellow blends.” They should go well with each other and contrast nicely with A. The effect of all these shades together is the look of a time-worn quilt.
Contrast C – See B.
Contrast D – See B.
Contrast E – See B

oh... so my original thinking was correct. phooey. :(

so, would you recommend the brighter Butter for Contrast B? or the lighter Aqua Frost? or does it even matter? it's so hard to decide when we don't know how it will assemble!

Personally, I don't think it will make a big difference. All your colors will work well with any combination in the knitted blanket.
