I think I've finally figured out the third row! I am having a problem increasing with the stitch at the back - guess I've only increased before on dishcloths with yarn over. I've gotten out some handicrafter yarn and am knitting a practice square with it. So, to all the other newbies out there - at least we will have something to keep us busy over the next week...

I messed with that a lot last night, too. I'm proud to say I finally figured it out and the increases look great.

I used these squares for larger pieces for afghans, and as I knit while watching TV. So, I used to increase always at the begining of the rows (not 2 in the same, and nothing the other, but always +1 on every row), and to decrease the same way, at the begining of every rows. The result is rather similar to yours, and it is much secure for inattentive knitters !!!

I love the different ideas everyone has to make the square perfect for them. I put a stitch marker on the right side. That way I know to increase whenever the stitch marker is facing me.

Everyone's squares look great! I've finished 2 so far (only 6 more to go!), and wish I could be home knitting now. We'll see how many I can get done tonight. And once I have some of both shades done I will try to get a couple of pictures posted. I've just got to say that this is my first KAL, and I am really enjoying it so far. I've been knitting since I was 6 and this first clue is a good basic way to start out, but I can't wait to see what else you throw at us next!

Wow, it would seem that a lot of us needed some "Simplicity" in our lives! :)

Can't wait to get home and post a pic of my first square, in the Simplicity palette.

I think they're pretty too - thanks! I've seen a few other photos and I think there's several of us out there with the same combinations. I can only get one done a day though during the work week. Going to start square 2 soon and hope to have a marathon knitting weekend! I must say that I am enjoying the Rah-rah ing and the encouragement this forum provides. (we need a cheerleader smiley with pompoms!)

This is my first really large knitting project since going back to work full time, while still keeping up the wife and mother and home routine. If it weren't for the daily (now hourly) news, I don't think I'd be as motivated to make 8 of the same square! I love seeing the different colours of yarn and peoples' first squares.

Here's how mine turned out using Sundrift and Breath of Blue:
