Blocking

I'm doing the CAL. This is my first time, and so excited! I've never done afghans with motifs, so have NEVER done any blocking. Please share your tips! i.e. materials you use, etc.

Thank you!

I just draw out a template on thick cardboard or foam. Then I place my work on it, pin it in place, spray it with water to get it damp, and let it airdry. Easy.

Okay, I'm a newbie to this KAL. I haven't used blocking templates before. Do I block this weeks squares after knitting them, or do I wait for further instructions, such as how to orient the blocks. Which color ends up in the center?

:hellogoodbye: FWIW .. the Bernat blocking video on Youtube isn't working right and gives an error message about 1/4 of the way into the video.

Sooo .... I watched a few other blocking videos that were available and think I've got the hang of it. I've got 3 squares done so far and think I'll try steaming them with my clothing steamer before I get too far along.

This is also my first attempt at making an afghan using motifs. Thanks for the blocking tip.

It looks okay now. I just watched it. Thanks for letting us know, though!

if our squares are already the proper size and laying nice and flat, should we still block them?

Postby hayleym86 » Sat Feb 18, 2012 12:12 am

This is my first CAL and I'm very excited!
I have never blocked before and was hoping you could offer some instructions/tips and let me know what materials I will need for that process.
Thanks in advance!

blocking tempalte vs clue 1 crochet

Postby vicxen99 » Sat Feb 18, 2012 1:23 pm

I just completed my first square - however my completed work is alot smaller then the template. since this is one of my first attempts at completing an actuall patern for an afghan - im assuming that my gage is off - am i correct - i was using a 5.00mm/ h/ 8 hook - should i be using a bigger hook? would that fix the problem?
