There's a definite possibility you'll run out of yarn, because your bigger square uses up more yarn than one that's 9.5"x9.5". I suggest you start over (I know, I know!) and maybe do a gauge swatch first with a pair of needles one size down, to see what that would get you.

Thank you, but I did do a gauge swatch on the 8 needle and everything measured correctly, so I continued on with that needle. Anything else to suggest - maybe stopping at 53 or 51 stitches?

mendiolabc wrote:I ran into the same problem. I did a gauge swatch on size 8 needles and my square ended up at about 11" !! It definitely looks like I went from knitting pretty tightly at the beginning, to not so much about 15 rows in. Probably because it was getting so late. Would I be better to go ahead and buy an extra skein of each color to accommodate how much larger my knitting is? I'm worried that if I go ahead and not use the first one I made, I'll run out of yarn anyway since I knit such a big square that I won't be using.

I would recommend printing out the blocking template (be sure you set your printer settings to print "actual size"), and as you knit, check it against the template. When your square reaches the largest part of the template, count your stitches, to see how many there are. Write it down for reference, and then change colors and start your decreasing.

When you make your next square, check it as you go again.....just to be sure. Count your stitches again when you reach the largest part of the square. Compare that number to the amount you got last time. Hopefully, it will be the same. If not, maybe your gauge is not consistent.

Consistent gauge comes with time and practice.

When I did my first KAL with Bernet and saw ALL those squares were to be finished in a week...I wanted to kick myself for even starting. Was working 7 (long) days a week, am not a fast knitter and thought I would never keep up.
Somehow it worked out and I even managed to finish on time. The people at Bernat know what they are doing and plan well.
Once you finish the first of a clue, the rest will go faster.
And remember if you dont finish on time, the world will not come to a end.

Excellent advice! :bravo:

so excited to begin this! (as with any new project!!) got the yarn, needles and now just to look up the clue on my Nook. BUT the color of the clue (lt blue I think!) is so light that it was much to hard to read! :( didn't want to have to sit at the computer or print it off, just wanted to use my smart phone or Nook. Anyone else have trouble reading the clues? BTW they look fine on my computer.

So, I've just finished the instructions from Row 5 to get 55 stitches. Should I break the colour now and then knit 55 with colour 2, or will that cause problems with the quantity of yarn I'll have for the rest of the project?

Clue indicates repeating rows 5 & 6 26 times; however, the math would indicate you would end up with 59 stitches (52 + 7) not 55 stitches.

Should this be repeat 24 times or 59 stitches?

Thanks
Barbara

I've seen on this forum that it should be 55 stitches due to an error in the original pattern, but it's been fixed from what I heard. So 55 stitches are how many you should be aiming for.

Interesting! I'm glad you've given us feedback about how the clue looks on a Nook.

Once you have done the increased row to give you the 55 stitches you still need to do the knit row in the first colour than stitch to the second colour as directed in pattern. Instructions saids to repeat row 5 and 6 24 times each

The ONLY reason I am glad to see my daughter and new granddaughter leave tomorrow is because I can finally seriously get started on this project. It is the first time I am doing anything like this and I'm psyched! :knit:
