Be sure to do a gauge swatch, to make sure your blanket is not too big. Also, you could run out of yarn before finishing the blanket if you knit too loosely.

Your gauge should be:
18 sts and 24 rows = 4" [10 cm] in stocking st

I ended up needing to go up to a K crochet hook. I really didn't think I crocheted that tight. I can't wait to get off work so I can get started!

Getting my gauge right

Postby karenrae » Fri Feb 17, 2012 8:45 am

I made a swatch for the knit along- with the needles (size 8) called for on the pattern--it was a few stitches and rows to many. The tutorial suggested bigger needles. I tried size 9 and now it is even bigger! I have knit before but nothing where the size really mattered (scarfs, mittens, hats,etc.). I have a lot of experience with crochet but would really like to knit this afghan. Really need HELP!

If your swatch is too big, you should try going DOWN a needle size. Try size 7 needles and see what happens.

How many stitches did you have when you measured across 4 inches?

White size hook did you have to use for Clue # 1 ?

Postby Safire » Sat Feb 18, 2012 12:19 pm

I had to use a J... and still a little small. Will the rest of the project come out to big if I continue to use this hook, OR should I use a smaller hook and give my squares a little stretch to make a 4 1/2 inch square when blocking them ??

I started with a J and found it a little small. So I tried a K and it came out perfect...so I'm sticking with the K!

you may want to do a gauge swatch to determine the hook to use and once you find it you should use that hook consistently in the project as long as your yarns are all the same weight. in the thread about gauge there was a good link to a tutorial if you need it. the big key is to do the gauge swatch and measure it laying flat and not stretched out. You should choose the right size hook to get you gauge. If you do this your motifs should come out the right size... you would just block them to make sure they are the right size/shape.

when i did my gauge swatch and i am using a "J" hook and i plan on using it for my entire project. i did have to stretch a tiny bit to get my squares into size/shape as the first motif was more round than square but they are the right size now

gauge

Postby jeandot » Tue Feb 21, 2012 1:02 pm

In one place the guage is 16 sts for 4in and in another post it is 18 sts. This is for the mystery kal. I cannot seem to get the gauge straight, thanks Jean

The 18 stitch gauge is for stockinette stitch
The 16 stitch gauge is for garter stitch
