What you have to do is go back, yo, pull up a loop from the front (working backwards) & work your dc over the 3 you already did. Let me know if you still don't understand & I will try to explain it better. Basically you are making an X over the stitches you already did.

Howdy! I'm wondering if ya'll could help me out. I'm working on a gift and I decided that the patten Handicrafter Cotton - Market Bag (crochet) would be quite a great gift (I love to do useful and practical gifts). My problem is that I'm looking through the pattern and all I'm seeing is a panel, and no real instructions on how to assemble anything into a bag. Now I've done market totes and similar such bags before and those are usually worked in a circular manner, but this pattern is fairly frustrating to me. :( And it's such a pretty bag that I'm hoping that I'm just missing something somewhere.

Thanks in advance for your time!

To SnowcloudSilver

Join Panels: Arrange Panels to form a box, having Side Panels opposite each other.
With WS of 2 Panels tog, join 2 strands of yarn with sl st at top left corner. Ch
1. Working through both thicknesses, work 1 row of sc evenly along side edge. Fasten off.
Rep for rem Panels.

Base: Work from ** to ** as given for Front and Back Panels.
Rep last row until work from beg measures 12 ins [30.5 cm], ending with a WS row. Do not fasten off.

Join Base to Panels: With RS of Base facing, place lower edge of joined Panels behind Base with WS of work tog, aligning corners of Base with joining rows of Panels.
Next rnd: Ch 1. Working through both thicknesses, work 1 rnd of sc evenly around all 4 sides of Base. Join with sl st in first sc. Fasten off.

The pattern I found for the bag on the Bernat website has the above instructions for joining the panels into a bag.

Here is the link for the full instructions I found http://www.bernat.com/pattern.php?PID=3839&cps=99999944

Hope this helps :)

Hmm, that's a different pattern.

This is the pattern I was looking at: http://www.bernat.com/pattern.php?PID=4592

I wonder if that would work the same way though for this bag...?

Thanks,
Snowcloud

No, that is a different bag completely. But, it does look like you just work the rows & you don't join it...it will be joined when you get to the top...and the crochet the handles on. All I can suggest is just to follow the pattern very carefully & I think it will turn out fine. Let me know how it goes :)

I looked again & you just work it from one side to the other...the handles keep it closed...there is no joining. You can see it if you look at the picture closely.
