Gage & Quantity of Yarn

Postby KnittinQuiltr » Wed Feb 22, 2012 11:26 am

Two questions!

First, may I say that this is my first time in a KAL! I'm loving' it!!!! :cloud9: I received my yarn ate and am frantically Trying to stay on schedule .. I only have 1 block of week one done!!! :knit:

Anyway, two questions. First: how important is the gage? I'm very close (within less than 2 stitches). Second: how closely does Bernat calculate the yardage of the yarn? Is it really tight and we will have nothing left ... Or do they allow some 'wiggle room'? :idonno:

Thanks so much!!

Welcome! :hellogoodbye:

Gauge is very important for the KAL. So, be sure to knit a gauge swatch before you start.
We have a great discussion going about gauge here: viewtopic.php?f=191&t=1347

(I will be moving your post into that discussion this evening, so don't think that it has been deleted. Just click "View your posts" at the top of the page, and you'll find it again.)

There is a little bit of wiggle room, but if your gauge is making your square too big, you may still run out of yarn. It's always safe to get an extra skein of each color, just in case.....especially since the Waverly yarn is made in dye lots for each color. You can always use your extra yarn to make a matching pillow or two! ;)

Hmm, I'll have to measure when I get home and check my clue 1 squares for the 16 spi. I was spot on with the 18 spi in stockinette, but my clue 1 squares are all around 8.5"x8.5".

Postby adamy1098 » Fri Feb 24, 2012 12:02 pm

I have finished clue 1 and now starting clue 2. I decided to check my gauge....I have the correct number of rows 24, to make 4"....but my stiches are way off. I am using 5mm needles with the Bernat Waverley yarn. I have 21 stitches that make 4". How do i correct this? Please help. Thanks :helpme:

You will find several forum members discussing "Getting Gauge" in the KAL/CAL Chatter area. I will merge your queston to that area tonight.

Try knitting a swatch with 5.5 mm or 6 mm needles. Good luck!

Gauge

Postby dreamknit » Sun Feb 26, 2012 12:43 pm

Hello everyone I am new to all of this and after figuring out the gauge for the first clue it was to my surprise that the second clue is going to need different needle size because of my tension. Is this always goin to happen or is it just me.

Several crocheters and knitters are working through issues with gauge. You can read about it in the existing "Getting Gauge" discussion.

Sometimes gauge will be affected by the kind of needle or hook you use. (metal, plastic, wood, bamboo, etc.) It can also be affected by the type of yarn you use for the blanket. The blankets for the 2012 Mystery KAL and CAL were designed for Bernat Waverly yarn, so it will be easier to achieve gauge with that yarn.

I am using bernat sv it is what I could find in a hurry. I also visited the place on how to achieve the right gauge and now I am using 4.5mm as this is the one I could achieve the best gauge with. Do the rows really matter as I am having a real problem getting the rows they call for lol.
