I am using the CAL to learn how to work from charts, so I am glad every clue has one (so far!) I am off to start my clue! :) :knit:

Finished the first Octogan in Contrast A! Looks so cute! My only problem is that it is only 9inches instead of 11! Each side of the octogan is 4 inches though so I am wondering if I should take it out and use a bigger hook or if it will be ok like this. Any suggestions? I am not going to sew in my ends until I hear the opinions from others. I know that for afgans and such I don't typically follow the gage or blocking but since this is a mystery project I don't want to screw it up! Especially because it is the first thing I am making and plan on keeping (been crochetting for 9 years and have never kept one project for myself)!

Last year all the clues had one so I am sure they will provide one for all the clues this year too! Enjoy!

Ive got a similar problem. Mine is 7 inches! oh no! But, my squares are three inches and my octagon sides are 3. Ive been thinking about just using my baby gauge for the entire afghan.

There are several joins in this pattern. Are you referring to the join to form a ring after you chain 6 stitches at the beginning?

Try another octagon with a larger hook, and see how it turns out.
Also, you might try to slow down and relax a little. You made that first motif in record time! (Probably from all the excitement.) I know that if I am tense or excited, I will crochet tighter than normal.

I am a really fast crochetter is all. My guage is actually really loose. I just did the gauge test (12dc, 7 rows= 4 inches) and it is perfect! I am really confused! I will take the advice though and try the next hook size up...grumble :hrmm:
