On Row 3 I think it was much easier to sl st up to the middle dc of the "petal". I HATE sewing in ends!

Try another octagon with a larger hook, and see how it turns out.
Also, you might try to slow down and relax a little. You made that first motif in record time! (Probably from all the excitement.) I know that if I am tense or excited, I will crochet tighter than normal.

I am a really fast crochetter is all. My guage is actually really loose. I just did the gauge test (12dc, 7 rows= 4 inches) and it is perfect! I am really confused! I will take the advice though and try the next hook size up...grumble :hrmm:

grr...i meant my tension is really loose...sorry!

No worries, my friend.
I haven't even started the motif yet, so I may be asking you for advice soon! ;)

I have to wait until after work and cleaning my house tonight! I have niece duty starting tomorrow and I have to make sure to toddler proof my house before she comes over. *Hopefully* I will be able to start an octagon tonight! :D

this is working up so cute! I found row 5 to be pretty simple, it just took a minute to read the entire line of pattern before hookin'. It might just be how my grandma taught me ages ago, but i always read an entire pattern (or like... a good chunk) before i start... *shrugs*

So far so good here!

I wasn't planning on blocking but now I'm thinking I might for this afghan. What is the BEST thing to use for a blocking board?

I'm the same way. I am at work and have read the whole thing several times! Off in 7 minutes then home to start the first motif...

Someone mentioned that their octogon should measure 11". I just taped my blocking template together and I am getting 10-5/8"... what should the measurement be?

I made my own ironing board cover using a 1inch checker board style fabric. Just lay the square out on your ironing board and pin it to the right size (clue one is 4 inches, clue 2 is 11 inches) then spray it DAMP (not wet) and either let it air dry or steam it a little bit and then let it air dry. Either way you get a well blocked look. I don't typically block for afgans, because the size being perfect isn't a real necessity, but for clothes it is a MUST! If you plan on doing it for this afgan it will add a lot of extra work but have fun!!!!

I use a towel folded up. then I take my template, place pins all around it, remove the template, spray the towel, place my motif down on the pins, add more pins where needed, then spray the top of the motif till soaked then I let it sit on a heat register till dry then repeat ...
I do not have blocking boards, never blocked a thing in my life before this, so this was my poor man's way out
