Yahoo....can't wait for lunch hour. I'm going to try just reading the pattern instead of looking at the chart. Thought it might be a bit more exciting....it is a sorry state of affairs, is it not? My friend is doing the KAL, so we will both be focused on the task at hand! :bravo:

Round 5 and up was easier for me using the chart as well. And I didn't break yarn for the 4th row just slip stitched up I figured the slight extra bulk would be the same as weaving the ends in and it is barely noticible. One down now have to take a break.

Each side of the octogan is 4 inches though so I am wondering if I should take it out and use a bigger hook or if it will be ok like this. Any suggestions? I am not going to sew in my ends until I hear the opinions from others. I know that for afgans and such I don't typically follow the gage or blocking but since this is a mystery project I don't want to screw it up! Especially because it is the first thing I am making and plan on keeping (been crochetting for 9 years and have never kept one project for myself)!

I had the same problem. My first clue came out fine but my second clue is not the size it should be. The third round is not laying flat so I am going to increase rnd 1 to 8 ch. rnd 2 to 6 ch. and rnd 4 to 6 ch. Hope that works.

I did the same thing as you on both counts. I found round 5 wasn't hard at all.

I hav to agree with you. Row 5 is very poorly written & very confusing. I don't usually have problems with a row but I did this one. It took me about 5 tries (kept trying to read the pattern) before I finally "got it" by looking at the diagram. I'm glad I'm not the only one that was having this problem. I figured it was the meds that I'm taking for the flu I've got.

I think Row 5 is written wrong. I took the time to write out the driections (casue I kept messing up) and according to the written directions you are supposed to have 2 chain 2 spaces in every chain 5 space from row 4, therefore doubling the number of stiches in row 5.

5th rnd: Sl st in first ch-5 sp. Ch 4 (counts as dc and ch 1).
[1 dc. Ch 2. (1 dc. Ch 1) twice] in same ch-5 sp. *[1 dc.
Ch 1. 1 dc. Ch 2. (1 dc. Ch 1) twice] in next ch-5 sp
. Rep from
* around. Join with sl st to 3rd ch of ch 4.

If I remember my algebra correctly (been awhile since I was in school) You just repeat what was contained in the parenthesis. I was still confused until I looked at the chart.

Is there a blocking pattern for clue #2? The blocking pattern with #2 seems to be the one for #1 and #4. Thanks! This is so much fun!

Got two in my mc done, the chart was a huge help on round 5 now back to the half square in the KAL that I left to start this. Think the crochet will be my reward for getting the knit ones done only have 5 and 1/2 finished on the first knit clue.
